Heroes of Might and Magic IV: The Gathering Storm (2002) is the first official expansion pack to the experimental fourth entry of the franchise. Developed by New World Computing and published by 3DO, this add-on was heavily marketed around a crucial technical fix: it officially integrated stable, functional multiplayer infrastructure directly into the game package, correcting the bare-bones standalone release.
Conceptually, the expansion doubled down on Heroes IV’s unique RPG elements, structuring its entire single-player campaign mode like an epic, party-based fantasy fellowship.
The Plot: The Fellowship Against Hexis
The narrative takes place on the new world of Axeoth, centered on a massive region called Devonshire. A rogue, incredibly powerful arch-mage named Hexis has grown maddened by cosmic forces. His unchecked control over Death and Nature magic has triggered global environmental decay—spreading plagues, forcing volcanoes to erupt, and causing chaotic natural disasters.
To stop Hexis, five entirely different champions from across the world must embark on independent quests to secure ancient, legendary artifacts. The expansion is cleverly divided into six progressive campaigns:
- Masters of Magic: Follows Bohb the Archmage as he travels across elemental regions to assemble the five forgotten relics of Nevar.
- Opposites Attract: Focuses on Kozuss, a unique hybrid wizard who must master the conflicting schools of Order and Chaos magic to claim the Necklace of Balance.
- Another Bard’s Tale: Tracks Agraynel the Bard on a stealth-forward journey through the elven lands of AvLee to protect and secure Aiffe’s Mandolin.
- Might Makes Right: Follows the brash, humorous barbarian Dogwoggle as he battles local rival warlords to obtain the legendary Tiger Armor and Tiger Helm.
- A Matter of Life and Death: Centers on Alita Eventide, a Dark Priestess juggling Life and Death magic, as she hunts for the Ring of Light and Cloak of Darkness.
- The Gathering Storm (The Finale): Once the first five individual campaigns are completed, all five heroes unite into a single army. Stripped of massive starting town reinforcements, players must navigate this high-level, multi-class RPG adventuring party through Hexis’s blighted frontline to defeat him in a titanic final showdown.
The Four New Apex Creatures
The expansion expanded the standard town lineups by introducing four high-tier neutral creatures that players could recruit from specialized adventure map dwellings:
- Goblin Knight (Tier 3 – Might): A heavily armored, highly resilient unit. Its plate armor grants native resistance to both physical and magical damage, and its passive traits include Stoneskin and Negate First Strike, making it a stellar defensive tank.
- Gargantuan (Tier 4 – Nature): A colossal earth elemental that completely transformed the Preserve faction meta. The Gargantuan functions as high-powered siege artillery, launching devastating boulder volleys that hit an area-of-effect. Crucially, it possesses the Shoots Twice passive, allowing it to vaporize entire armies before they bridge the distance gap.
- Dark Champion (Tier 4 – Death): A terrifying undead knight riding a skeletal steed. Boasting massive combat attributes, it can cast Terror to force enemy stacks to skip their combat turns, and it possesses a powerful Regeneration passive that heals up to 50 health points at the end of every round.
- Evil Sorceress (Tier 4 – Chaos): A hyper-mobile, glass-cannon spellcaster. She can cast Teleport to blink anywhere across the combat map, shields herself with Magic Mirror to reflect hostile spells back at the caster, and drops catastrophic offensive nukes like Implosion.
Artifact Combination Synergy
The Gathering Storm introduced 16 powerful new relics explicitly tailored to the five campaign heroes. When a hero completes their collection and equips the matching set, the items fuse into a super-artifact that grants exclusive class-breaking traits. For example, assembling Bohb’s Nevar set maximizes his spellcasting stats and grants him permanent access to high-tier magic, while Dogwoggle’s completed Tiger Set drastically transforms his baseline physical attack multipliers.
