Heroes Chronicles: Masters of the Elements
Where to buy
Heroes Chronicles: Masters of the Elements (2000) pushes the Immortal Hero into a state of absolute psychological torture. Developed by New World Computing and running on the Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death engine framework, this 8-scenario standalone campaign forces the series’ protagonist, Tarnum, to master and wield the exact tool he despises most: high-level magic.
The Plot: The Enemy of My Enemy
The narrative kicks off as a 10,000-year-old cosmic truce between the four supreme Elemental Lords (Air, Earth, Water, and Fire) abruptly expires. Unleashed from their respective pocket dimensions, these chaotic deities prepare to use the mortal world of Antagarich as a personal war zone—a catastrophic conflict that would effortlessly tear the planet apart.
To halt the apocalypse, the Barbarian Ancestors drop Tarnum directly into a waking nightmare:
- The Magical Assimilation: Traditional steel and physical armies are entirely useless against primordial elementals. To bridge the gap, Tarnum must journey to the kingdom of Bracada, form a tentative alliance with the Immortal King Gavin Magnus, and study to become a high-tier Wizard.
- The Ultimate Hypocrisy: This is a magnificent piece of dark, historic irony. In his past life as the tyrannical Barbarian King (detailed in Warlords of the Wasteland), Tarnum’s entire identity was built on his brutal, bloody crusade to slaughter and enslave the very same Wizards of Bracaduun. Now, he must wear the robes of a mage, memorize incantations, and actively participate in the craft he spent his youth trying to violently erase from the earth.
The Elemental Plane Gauntlet
The structure of Masters of the Elements plays out like a mythological tour through the foundational building blocks of the Might and Magic universe. Across its 8 scenarios, players must invade the home planes of the elemental gods to shatter their unified front:
- Tower Dominance: Players primarily control the Tower faction, trading cheap barbarian squads for highly technical units like animated Obsidian Gargoyles, Iron Golems, Genies, and long-range, armored Titans.
- The Magic Tomes and Orbs: The primary sub-goal of the campaign maps involves a massive item scavenger hunt. In each elemental plane, players can fight through elite neutral guardians to secure game-changing, persistent relics that carry over from map to map:
- The Plane of Air: Yields the Orb of the Firmament and the Tome of Air Magic.
- The Plane of Water: Yields the Orb of Driving Rain, Tome of Water Magic, and the pieces to form the Admiral’s Hat.
- The Plane of Earth: Yields the Orb of Silt and the Tome of Earth Magic.
- The Plane of Fire: Yields the Orb of Tempestuous Fire and the Tome of Fire Magic.
- Persistent Spell Supremacy: Because the magical Tomes automatically grant Tarnum access to every single spell within that specific element regardless of his actual Wisdom secondary skill, and the Orbs permanently boost that elemental damage by 50%, Tarnum organically scales into an absolute, reality-warping god-tier battle mage by the final scenarios.
Summary & Legacy
Masters of the Elements is celebrated within the HoMM3 community for offering a highly distinct power progression loop. Watching Tarnum transition from a magic-stripped commander who is fundamentally forbidden from building a Mage Guild or buying a Spellbook in the opening scenario into an unstoppable arch-mage casting expert-level Chain Lightning and Implosion across the final maps is incredibly satisfying. True to his stubborn character, the moment his cosmic duty is fulfilled and the Elemental Lords are sealed back in their prisons, a disgusted Tarnum promptly strips off his robes, discards his spellbook, and vows never to touch magic again.
