Remnant: From the Ashes is a 2019 third-person shooter developed by Gunfire Games and published by Perfect World Entertainment, released August 20, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Switch port in March 2023. It holds Metacritic scores of 78 (PC), 77 (PS4), and 81 (Xbox One) and sold over 3 million copies by the end of 2021 — the game that proved “Dark Souls with guns” was a genre waiting to happen, not a punchline.

Its structure borrows Souls bones — checkpoints, dodge-rolls, punishing bosses, trap-laden exploration — then swaps the sword-first combat for gunplay and layers on a hook of its own: dynamically generated worlds that reroll layouts, events, and even which bosses you meet.

The Root and the Worlds

Earth has fallen to the Root, a tree-like interdimensional invader; as one of humanity’s last survivors, the player travels from the last-bastion of Ward 13 through crystal gateways into a string of alien worlds — desert Rhom, jungle Yaesha, and beyond — hunting a way to strike the Root’s heart. Each campaign is procedurally assembled from handcrafted chunks: two players can face different dungeons, side quests, and boss rosters in the “same” story, and rerolling a completed campaign for new configurations is the intended endgame loop.

Reception

Critics landed on “generally favorable”: IGN’s 8/10 caught the consensus — a beautifully deranged apocalypse with boss victories worthy of its Souls inspirations, undercut by an underwhelming gear system and difficulty spikes clearly tuned for co-op. The patientgamers-style community verdict has aged the same way: superb three-player runs, a thinner solo experience, and boss design that leans too often on adds swarming the arena — the exact complaints the sequel was built to answer. Two DLCs (Swamps of Corsus, Subject 2923) expanded the campaign before Gunfire moved on.

Where to Play It Today

Remnant: From the Ashes is on Steam, Epic, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch — the Complete Edition with both DLCs routinely drops under $10, and co-op remains active. The Switch port works but reviewed noticeably weaker; on any other platform, this remains one of the best cheap co-op campaigns in the genre.
