Sid Meier’s Alien Crossfire (commonly abbreviated as SMACX or Alien Crossfire) is the official major expansion pack for the critically acclaimed sci-fi turn-based strategy 4X video game Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri. Developed by Firaxis Games and published by Electronic Arts, the expansion launched in October 1999 for Microsoft Windows, with subsequent Mac OS and Linux versions bundled into complete editions.
Produced and designed by Tim Train alongside franchise lead Brian Reynolds, Alien Crossfire deeply expands the narrative and mechanical scope of the 1999 baseline client.
The expansion introduces a major plot shift: the sudden arrival of Chiron’s ancient alien masters, the Progenitors, who split into two warring factions locked in a cosmic civil war.
To match this extraterrestrial threat, the expansion introduces seven brand-new playable factions (two alien and five human), expands the modular unit workshop with advanced weaponry, injects original tech branches, and integrates fresh Secret Project world wonders.

The Narrative Shift: The Progenitor Civil War
The core addition of Alien Crossfire is the arrival of the Progenitor Aliens. Millions of years prior to human colonization, an ancient, hyper-advanced alien race used Planet (Chiron) as a biological laboratory to sow the seeds of a planetary super-consciousness.
When their research vessels return to the star system, they find their experiment disrupted by the fractured human factions of the shipwrecked UNS Unity.
The Progenitors operate on entirely different mechanical rules than human factions. They possess a permanent, massive technological advantage out-of-the-box, starting the match with advanced infrastructure blueprints and full visual detection of all overworld energy grids.
They do not participate in standard human diplomacy, viewing terrestrial colonists as primitive pests that must be cleansed. Crucially, the Progenitors are locked in an absolute, genocidal ideological schism:
- Guardian Lular H’mindee (Manifold Caretakers): View the awakening of Planet’s sentience as a sacred, holy transition. Their goal is to safeguard the ecosystem and guide Planet’s transformation into a cosmic godhead.
- Conqueror Judaa Marr (Manifold Usurpers): Seek to violently hijack and weaponize Planet’s raw energy to fuel their faction’s interstellar military conquest, viewing the Caretakers as absolute traitors.
The Stargate Victory
The inclusion of aliens changes the endgame victory matrix. If either Progenitor faction constructs a network of high-energy structures culminating in the Subspace Generator, they win the match by opening a massive warp gateway. This allows them to summon their home battle fleets from deep space to instantly incinerate all opposing factions on Chiron.
The Seven New Factions
The expansion introduces seven original factions, bringing the game’s total concurrent roster pool to 14 playable societies.
The 2 Alien Superpowers
- Manifold Caretakers (Lular H’mindee): Focused on absolute defense and preservation. They receive permanent bonuses to defensive base shielding, expand their population boundaries quickly, and safely harvest higher resource yields from wild xenofungus tiles.
- Manifold Usurpers (Judaa Marr): Built strictly for aggressive military pacification. Their units inherit a permanent offensive combat strength multiplier, and they accumulate severe production bonuses when manufacturing heavy armor weapons.
The 5 Second-Wave Human Factions
- Prime Function Aki Zeta-5 (The Cybernetic Consciousness): Human colonists who chose to systematically replace parts of their biological brains with synthetic microprocessors to escape the trauma of the Unity crash. They boast exceptional scientific research speeds and high municipal efficiency, but suffer a growth penalty because cybernetic implants slow down traditional reproductive rates.
- Captain Sinder Roze (The Nautilus Pirates): Fully engineered to dominate maritime geography. The Pirates initialize the match floating directly on deep ocean tiles. Their naval vessels move with extreme speed, and they can construct fully functional aquatic bases out-of-the-box, letting them safely monopolize ocean trenches.
- Foreman Domai (The Free Drones): A massive worker’s revolt that seceded from Chairman Yang’s brutal Human Hive. Composed of manual laborers and miners, the Drones receive a massive reduction in city maintenance corruption fees and enjoy high industrial manufacturing speeds, but are heavily penalized along the science tree due to a stark lack of formal academic elites.
- Datajack Sela (The Data Angels): Master hackers, black-market operators, and shadow corporate spies. The Angels specialize in absolute covert operations. Their spies steal technologies at extreme financial discounts, and they receive a passive gold payout whenever a foreign faction attempts to hack their domestic data lines.
- Prophet Cha Dawn (The Cult of Planet): Shamanistic eco-extremists who view the native Mind Worm lifeforms as divine deities. They treat heavy industrial manufacturing as a sin, suffering severe production penalties. However, their units gain massive multipliers during Psi-combat, and they can actively capture, breed, and deploy massive swarms of wild alien wildlife directly onto battlefields.
Expanded Workshop Components & Secret Projects
To counter the massive threat of the Progenitor empires, the expansion introduces key items to the game’s modular Unit Workshop:
New Weaponry & Equipment
- Resonance Weapons: Advanced sound-wave armaments specifically engineered to pierce through the telepathic mind-shields of Progenitor forces, leveling the tactical playing field during late-game combat encounters.
- Fossilized Delusions & Algorithmic Modules: High-tier special abilities that can be attached to chassis structures to grant permanent radar invisibility, or insulate units from receiving localized mental damage during high-stakes Psi-combat skirmishes.
- Spore Launchers: A brand-new native alien unit classification. Spore Launchers act as mobile, biological artillery divisions that prowl inside xenofungus tiles, launching toxic long-range biological attacks to soften up approaching human infantries from a safe distance.
Overworld Wonders: The 7 Secret Projects
Players can pool their manufacturing hammers to build seven original Secret Projects, which act as game-altering world wonders:
- The Bulk Matter Transmitter: Infuses the constructing empire with a permanent, massive +2 manufacturing production hammer modifier across every single functional base operating on the planet grid.
- The Cloud Base Academy: Permanently shifts global airspace logistics, automatically awarding free high-tier combat promotions and instant healing sub-routines to every single air vessel trained by your faction.
- The Clinical Immortality Array: Spikes domestic citizen happiness metrics, permanently protecting your entire civilization from experiencing localized civil unrest or rioting.
- The Self-Aware Colony: Cuts the maintenance upkeep cost of all standing city infrastructure buildings cleanly in half across the globe.
- The Universal Translator: Grants an immediate, massive scientific breakthrough, automatically awarding the constructing player with two free, un-researched advanced technologies directly from the tech web.
- The Pholus Mutagen: Drastically reduces your civilization’s ecological footprint, heavily lowering the risk of Planet launching automated Mind Worm counter-strikes due to industrial pollution.
- The Network Node Backbone: Links all domestic data terminals, granting a massive science research velocity multiplier to any city center hosting an active network node infrastructure.
Modern Preservation & Legacy (2026)
As of May 2026, Sid Meier’s Alien Crossfire is preserved as a legendary masterpiece within the retro strategy community. The expansion is highly celebrated for its exceptional sci-fi lore writing, featuring chilling, philosophical terminal voiceovers from figures like Aki Zeta-5 and Domai whenever a player unlocks an advanced futuristic technology node.
The expansion is no longer sold or distributed as an isolated add-on; its entire source code, scenario maps, and voice lines are natively packaged into the global digital installer for the definitive Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack across major digital storefronts including GOG.com and Steam.
The application runs reliably under modern 64-bit multi-core Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems out-of-the-box.
To ensure visual stability on contemporary high-end monitors, the retro strategy community continuously maintains open-source compatibility wrappers—most notably the PRACX high-resolution rendering patch and the Thinker AI Overhaul Mod.
These lightweight external modifications safely inject native multi-core CPU tracking, repair legacy UI display hitches, optimize the computer’s artificial intelligence to be aggressively competitive, and smoothly scale the iconic 2D isometric grids, modular unit workshops, and intense cross-species alien battles of Alien Crossfire into flawless modern widescreen resolutions.
