Grand Theft Auto 5
Where to buy
Grand Theft Auto V (also known as GTA V or GTA 5) is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It is the seventh main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series and the fifteenth installment overall. Set in the sprawling, satirical open world of San Andreas (loosely based on Southern California), the game follows three protagonists — retired bank robber Michael De Santa, street hustler Franklin Clinton, and unhinged drug dealer and gunrunner Trevor Philips — as they navigate heists, crime, corruption, and personal chaos while evading powerful criminal organizations and a shady government agency. Blending dark humor, cinematic storytelling, and unparalleled freedom, Grand Theft Auto V is widely regarded as one of the most influential and best-selling video games of all time.
The single-player campaign spans dozens of hours of main missions, side activities, and random events, while the companion multiplayer mode, Grand Theft Auto Online, has evolved into a living, ever-expanding online world with its own narrative, businesses, vehicles, and social features that continue to receive major updates more than a decade after launch.
Gameplay
Grand Theft Auto V is played from a third-person perspective (with an optional first-person mode added in later versions). Players can freely switch between the three protagonists at almost any time outside of missions, each with their own unique skills, personalities, and story arcs that intersect in dramatic ways. The open world of Los Santos and Blaine County is massive and densely packed with activities: high-speed driving, shooting, flying, boating, parachuting, yoga, golf, tennis, stock-market trading, property management, and countless random encounters.
Combat features a deep cover-shooting system, melee fighting, and a wide arsenal of weapons and vehicles. Missions are designed with multiple approaches (stealth, all-out assault, or clever tactics), and the game’s physics, AI, and environmental interactions create emergent gameplay moments. The Expanded and Enhanced versions (2022/2025) add improved graphics, faster loading, ray tracing, HDR, 4K resolution at 60 fps (with a 30 fps Fidelity mode on consoles), new wildlife and traffic density, and upgraded combat and driving mechanics.
Grand Theft Auto Online supports up to 30+ players and includes heists, businesses, racing, deathmatches, roleplay servers, and a constantly updated live-service ecosystem.
Development and Legacy
Development took over five years and involved roughly 1,000 people across multiple Rockstar studios. Directed by Leslie Benzies, with writing by Dan Houser, Rupert Humphries, and others, the game pushed the limits of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 hardware while being rebuilt for newer platforms. It features motion-captured performances, a star-studded voice cast (including Ned Luke, Shawn Fonteno, and Steven Ogg), and an iconic original score mixed with licensed music.
Upon release, Grand Theft Auto V shattered sales records and critical acclaim, holding the title of the fastest-selling entertainment product ever at launch. It has sold over 200 million copies worldwide across all versions, generated billions in revenue (largely from GTA Online microtransactions), and remains a cultural phenomenon. The game has influenced countless open-world titles and cemented Rockstar’s reputation for satirical, immersive storytelling. A standalone version of GTA Online launched alongside the next-gen releases, and the franchise continues with ongoing support even as Grand Theft Auto VI is in development.
