Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is a 2002 open-world action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. Released in October 2002 for the PlayStation 2 (and subsequently ported to the PC, Xbox, mobile devices, and modernized via the 2021 Definitive Edition), it is the second 3D game in the Grand Theft Auto series. Arriving just one year after the industry-shattering GTA III, it traded the dreary, grey skies of Liberty City for a neon-soaked, pastel-colored love letter to 1980s pop culture, heavily inspired by Miami Vice and Scarface.
Core Concept and Story
Set in the sun-drenched, drug-fueled year of 1986, the game takes place in the titular Vice City (a highly satirical, fictionalized version of Miami, Florida).
You play as Tommy Vercetti (brilliantly voiced by the late Ray Liotta), a ruthless and highly competent mobster who has just been released from a 15-year prison sentence. His boss in Liberty City, Sonny Forelli, immediately sends him down to Vice City to oversee a massive cocaine deal. When the deal is violently ambushed, Tommy loses both the drugs and the money. Stranded in a strange city, Tommy goes on a bloody, relentless crusade to find out who set him up, get the money back, and ultimately violently seize control of the city’s entire criminal underworld for himself.
Gameplay and Features
While it utilized the same core engine as GTA III, Vice City introduced several massive, franchise-defining features that permanently changed the trajectory of the series:
- A Fully Voiced Protagonist: This was a massive leap forward for cinematic storytelling in games. Unlike the silent protagonist “Claude” from the previous game, Tommy Vercetti had a distinct personality, a voice, and actual agency in the story, allowing for much deeper character interactions.
- The Real Estate Empire: Instead of just bouncing from boss to boss taking orders, Tommy could actively purchase commercial real estate across the city. Buying assets like the Malibu Club, a taxi firm, a pornographic film studio, or a car showroom unlocked entirely new mission strings and generated a daily stream of passive income.
- Motorcycles and Aircraft: Vice City drastically expanded the vehicle sandbox. It introduced fully drivable motorcycles (complete with wheelies and the ability to shoot forward), as well as helicopters, which finally allowed players to freely explore the verticality of the city’s skyline.
- The Legendary Soundtrack: It is impossible to discuss Vice City without mentioning its radio stations. Curated across stations like Flash FM, V-Rock, and Emotion 98.3, the game featured an unbelievably stacked, fully licensed soundtrack of real 80s hits from artists like Michael Jackson, Hall & Oates, Megadeth, and Judas Priest. It is widely credited with single-handedly sparking the global 1980s nostalgia revival of the 2000s.
The Legacy and “Demolition Man”
Vice City was a staggering commercial success, becoming the best-selling video game of 2002. It was universally praised for its immaculate vibes, incredible voice acting (featuring Hollywood stars like Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds, and Danny Trejo), and its gripping, cinematic narrative.
However, it is also deeply infamous for a single mission: “Demolition Man.” Very early in the game, players are forced to fly a remote-controlled miniature helicopter through an active construction site to plant timed explosives while being attacked by angry construction workers with hammers. Thanks to the notoriously clunky RC flight controls, this single mission has scarred an entire generation of gamers, standing as one of the most frustrating difficulty spikes in PS2 history.
(Note: Like San Andreas, Vice City was remastered in 2021 as part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which brought updated lighting and GTA V-style controls, but suffered a highly controversial, heavily bugged launch).
