Battlezone 98 Redux is the stellar 2016 remaster of Activision’s groundbreaking 1998 FPS/RTS hybrid masterpiece. Developed by Big Boat Interactive and published by Rebellion Developments, this release was an absolute love letter to one of the most mechanically unique PC games of the 1990s. It successfully rescued a brilliant, deeply niche classic from the purgatory of abandonware and brought it flawlessly into the modern gaming era.
The narrative perfectly preserves the original game’s brilliant alternate-history sci-fi premise. The 1960s Space Race was merely a public cover story; the true goal of the Apollo missions was to secretly harvest Bio-Metal, a highly advanced, self-replicating alien material left behind by a meteor shower. Players are thrust into a massive, secret interplanetary Cold War between the United States (NSDF) and the Soviet Union (CCA), fighting across the Moon, Mars, and Venus while piloting heavily armed hover-tanks.
Gameplay and Modernizations
Redux made the incredibly smart decision to leave the underlying 1998 source code and complex mechanics almost entirely untouched. It still plays exactly like the original—you are the commander of an army, but you never leave the first-person cockpit of your tank. You still build bases, manage the scrap metal economy, and eject to snipe enemy pilots.
Instead of changing the gameplay, Big Boat Interactive focused entirely on audiovisual modernizations and quality-of-life upgrades:
- Remodeled Assets: The blocky, low-polygon hover-tanks and buildings of the 1998 original were completely rebuilt from scratch. The remaster features high-definition, highly detailed 3D models and completely redrawn high-resolution textures, while staying strictly faithful to the original art direction.
- Modernized Lighting: The engine was overhauled to support modern lighting, real-time shadows, and particle effects, making the neon lasers and massive Bio-Metal explosions pop brilliantly against the dark, barren landscapes of the solar system.
- Revamped HUD: The incredibly complex heads-up display used to issue RTS commands and build structures was cleaned up and optimized for modern widescreen monitors, making it much easier to read in the heat of a dogfight.
- Online Multiplayer: The original game’s dial-up and LAN multiplayer scene had been dead for over a decade. Redux integrated modern online matchmaking directly through Steam, allowing up to 8 players to seamlessly jump into frantic Deathmatch and Strategy modes.
The Steam Workshop Renaissance
The most important feature of Battlezone 98 Redux wasn’t graphical; it was the native inclusion of Steam Workshop support.
For almost twenty years, the original Battlezone had been kept alive by a highly dedicated, underground modding community. By officially integrating mod support, Rebellion allowed those veteran players to easily port two decades’ worth of custom maps, entirely new single-player campaigns, custom vehicle models, and balance tweaks directly into the remaster. With a single click, new players could access an infinite stream of community-generated content, giving the game incredible replayability.
Development and Legacy
The existence of Redux is a fantastic preservation success story. When Atari (who had previously acquired the IP) filed for bankruptcy, Rebellion Developments swooped in during the 2013 auction and purchased the Battlezone rights. Recognizing the intense cult following the 1998 original possessed, they hired Big Boat Interactive to treat the source code with the utmost respect.
Released in April 2016, the game was a massive success among strategy veterans and introduced a whole new generation to the concept of the FPS/RTS hybrid. Its success proved that there was still an active, hungry market for the franchise, directly leading Rebellion to remaster the game’s legendary “lost” 1999 expansion pack, The Red Odyssey, releasing it as official DLC later that same year. Furthermore, the success of this project paved the way for the 2018 remaster of its sequel, Battlezone: Combat Commander.
Today, in 2026, Battlezone 98 Redux stands as the absolute gold standard for how to properly remaster a classic, highly complex 90s PC game.
