Battlezone 2: Combat Commander
Battlezone II: Combat Commander is a 1999/2000 cult-classic sequel that pioneered the “First-Person Strategy” genre, seamlessly blending vehicle-based action with deep real-time strategy. Developed by Pandemic Studios and published by Activision, it expanded upon its predecessor’s Cold War moon-race premise into a sprawling, multi-world conflict set in an alternate 1990s.
The Hybrid Command Loop
The defining mechanic of Battlezone II is its dual-perspective gameplay. While players spend most of their time in the cockpit of a hover-tank or walker, they are simultaneously managing a full-scale RTS economy:
- The “Eye in the Sky” UI: Players can issue complex commands—such as move, attack, follow, or recycle—to any unit using the function keys or a tactical satellite map, all without leaving the first-person perspective.
- Biometal Economy: Combat revolves around the control of Biometal scrap and pools. Scavengers must be dispatched to collect wreckage from destroyed units, while Extractors are placed on geysers to generate a steady flow of resources for base expansion.
- Modular Base Building: Both factions utilize a “Recycler” (or its equivalent), a mobile unit that unfolds into the heart of the base. From there, players construct factories, armories, and defensive turrets to secure the perimeter.
A Galaxy Divided: The Factions
The narrative centers on a conflict between two radically different military cultures, each utilizing the “Biometal” technology discovered during the secret Space Race:
- ISDF (International Space Defense Force): A unified human military force formed after the Cold War. Their tech is rugged and industrialized, characterized by orange-and-black boxy hover-tanks, powerful walkers like the Attila, and reliable ballistic/missile weaponry.
- The Scion Convergence: A mysterious “alien” foe that is eventually revealed to be mutated humans—the former Black Dog Squadron—who were forcibly fused with Biometal in a secret project called “Project Pedigree”. Their technology is organic and graceful, featuring morphing vehicles, plasma-based weaponry, and the ability to “blink” or teleport across short distances.
The Descent into “Project Pedigree”
The campaign follows John Cooke, a pilot for the ISDF under the command of the ruthless General Armand Braddock. The story takes a dramatic turn on the “Dark Planet,” where the player discovers that the Scions are not an invading alien force, but the tragic victims of Braddock’s own illegal experiments.
At a critical juncture, the player is faced with a choice:
- Side with the ISDF: Continue following Braddock’s orders to eradicate the Scion “threat,” ultimately leading to a darker ending where Braddock institutes a military dictatorship.
- Defect to the Scions: Join the resistance led by Padishah Frank Burns and Yelena Shabayev to expose Braddock’s crimes and save the Scion Core planet from terraforming-driven destruction.
