Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs is a 2000 Nintendo 64 exclusive developed by Syrox Developments and published by Crave Entertainment. Rather than just a simple console port of Activision’s groundbreaking 1998 PC masterpiece, Rise of the Black Dogs served as a standalone adaptation and expansion, bringing the incredibly complex FPS/RTS hybrid genre to a home console while injecting a massive chunk of exclusive, brand-new content.
The narrative retains the brilliant alternate-history sci-fi premise of the PC original: the 1960s Space Race is a cover for a secret, interplanetary Cold War between the United States (NSDF) and the Soviet Union (CCA) over an alien, self-replicating resource called Bio-Metal. However, this N64 iteration shifts the spotlight toward a shadowy, elite squadron mentioned only in the lore of the PC version: The Black Dogs.
Gameplay and Console Adaptations
Bringing a game that originally utilized almost every key on a standard PC keyboard to the Nintendo 64’s trident controller was considered a monumental task. Syrox Developments completely rebuilt the user interface to accommodate the gamepad, relying heavily on the N64’s C-buttons and D-pad to navigate nested menus while the analog stick handled the twitch-reflex hover-tank piloting.
While slightly streamlined, the core mechanics that made the PC version a masterpiece were miraculously preserved:
- First-Person Commanding: You still control a hover-tank from the cockpit, actively dogfighting while simultaneously issuing base-building and unit-production orders via a drop-down command menu.
- The Scrap Economy: Bio-Metal remains the only resource. You must protect your Scavengers as they scoop up the wreckage of destroyed enemy tanks to fund the construction of your own base and vehicle fleet.
- Ejecting: Just like the PC version, if your tank is destroyed, you can eject into the lunar gravity, run around on foot with a sniper rifle, and physically hijack enemy vehicles.
- Expansion Pak Support: The game heavily utilized the N64 Expansion Pak, which allowed for a higher-resolution display mode and slightly improved framerates during chaotic, explosion-heavy skirmishes.
The Black Dogs Campaign
The absolute primary selling point of this cartridge was the inclusion of an entirely new, console-exclusive third campaign.
In the PC game, the Black Dogs were a legendary, highly classified special operations unit of the American NSDF, commanded by the fiercely independent General George Collins. In Rise of the Black Dogs, players finally get to step into their cockpits. Operating on the absolute fringes of the solar system, the Black Dogs act as a rogue third human faction. Their campaign is notoriously difficult, featuring 14 massive, highly tactical missions that bridge the narrative gap between the American and Soviet conflicts and the terrifying arrival of the alien Fury swarm.
To match their elite status, the Black Dogs were given a customized, visually distinct arsenal, featuring stealth-black armor plating, unique hover-tank variants, and highly specialized weaponry not available to the standard NSDF forces.
N64 Split-Screen Multiplayer
While the PC version had LAN and dial-up, Rise of the Black Dogs brought the war to the living room couch. The game featured robust up-to-four-player split-screen multiplayer modes.
Players could engage in standard Deathmatch mode (pure first-person tank combat with no base building) or Strategy mode (the full FPS/RTS hybrid experience). Trying to manage a complex resource economy, build a base, and dogfight your friends on a tiny quarter of a CRT television screen was absolute, glorious, frame-dropping chaos.
Development and Legacy
Released in the spring of 2000, near the tail end of the Nintendo 64’s lifespan, Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs received mixed-to-positive reviews. Critics heavily praised Syrox Developments for successfully cramming such a deep, mechanically complex PC game onto a 32MB cartridge. The inclusion of the exclusive Black Dogs campaign made it a must-play for hardcore fans of the franchise.
However, the game suffered from the standard limitations of the hardware. To keep the game running, a heavy layer of the infamous “N64 fog” was utilized to obscure draw distances, and the framerate would frequently tank when too many tanks and laser blasts filled the screen. Furthermore, navigating complex RTS menus with the D-pad while actively dodging missiles was an incredibly steep learning curve for console players.
Today, Rise of the Black Dogs remains a fascinating, highly ambitious oddity in the N64 library. While the 1998 PC original was beautifully remastered in 2016, the exclusive Black Dogs campaign remains permanently trapped on this classic 64-bit cartridge.
