Grand Theft Auto VI (also known as GTA VI or GTA 6) is an upcoming 2026 action-adventure game developed and published by Rockstar Games. It is the eighth main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series and the long-awaited sequel to Grand Theft Auto V (2013). Set in the sprawling, satirical open world of the fictional U.S. state of Leonida (inspired by Florida), the game follows a romantic criminal duo — Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval — as they navigate heists, betrayal, and a sprawling conspiracy in the neon-drenched streets of Vice City and beyond. With its massive scale, cutting-edge technology, and signature blend of dark humor, social satire, and freedom, Grand Theft Auto VI is poised to redefine open-world gaming once again.
The story centers on Lucia (the series’ first non-optional female protagonist) and her partner Jason, a couple who have always known the system is stacked against them. After a seemingly straightforward score goes wrong, they become entangled in a dangerous criminal conspiracy that spans the entire state of Leonida. Forced to rely on each other more than ever, the pair must survive rival gangs, corrupt authorities, and their own pasts while chasing the American Dream in the sunniest — and most chaotic — place in America.
Gameplay
Grand Theft Auto VI returns to the third-person open-world formula that defined its predecessors, but on an unprecedented scale. Players can freely switch between Lucia and Jason, each with distinct skills, personalities, and story-driven abilities that influence how missions unfold. The world of Leonida includes the vibrant, Miami-inspired Vice City, the swampy Everglades-inspired areas, the Leonida Keys, and additional regions such as Port Gellhorn and Mount Kalaga National Park — creating one of the largest and most detailed maps in gaming history.
Gameplay is expected to build on Grand Theft Auto V with major advancements in:
- Dynamic NPC and police AI (more reactive behaviors, improved pursuit tactics, and environmental interactions).
- Enhanced vehicle handling, physics, and a vast array of new land, sea, and air vehicles.
- Expanded mission design with multiple approaches, heists, side activities, and emergent gameplay moments.
- Deeper role-playing elements, including relationship mechanics between the protagonists.
- Improved stealth, cover-based shooting, and a returning wanted-level system with modern twists.
The game runs on an evolved version of the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), delivering next-generation visuals, ray tracing, massive draw distances, and immersive audio design. A companion online mode, Grand Theft Auto Online successor, is also in development and will launch alongside or shortly after the single-player campaign.
Development and Legacy
Development has spanned over a decade, with Rockstar North leading the project following the record-breaking success of Grand Theft Auto V and its ongoing Online mode. The game was formally revealed with its first trailer in December 2023, sparking unprecedented hype. Multiple delays followed: originally targeted for Fall 2025, it was pushed to May 26, 2026, and then to its current date of November 19, 2026, as Rockstar stated they needed “additional time to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”
The title builds directly on the technological and narrative foundations of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V, promising greater density, realism, and player freedom. Marketing is set to ramp up in Summer 2026, with physical editions confirmed.
