ARC Raiders is a third-person extraction shooter developed and published by Embark Studios — the Stockholm team of ex-DICE veterans under Nexon — released October 30, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S at $40. It holds Metacritic scores of 86 on PC, 85 on PS5, and 88 on Xbox, a 92% OpenCritic recommendation rate, and the trophy case of the year: Best Multiplayer at The Game Awards 2025, Online Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards, Multiplayer at the BAFTAs, and Most Innovative Gameplay at the Steam Awards. It sold 4 million copies in its first twelve days and 14 million by February 2026, peaked above 700,000 concurrent players across platforms, and did it all in a genre — the PvPvE extraction shooter — that had never produced a mainstream hit before.

The question that ranks beside the game’s own store page is “what’s so good about it, why is it the phenomenon?”, and the community’s answer has become the game’s identity: it is the extraction shooter in which strangers, by habit, choose not to kill each other. This card covers the lore, the machines, the systems, and — as of two days before this writing — the Frozen Trail update that opens its second year.

What Are the ARC, and Why Is Everyone Underground?

It is 2180. Decades earlier, hostile machines — the ARC — descended from orbit, and humanity retreated beneath the surface of a ruined Italy, into the underground city of Speranza: a warren of self-governing contradas beneath the Rust Belt. You are a Raider, one of the people who go “Topside” when ARC activity dips to scavenge the components Speranza runs on, through dam complexes, buried streets, an abandoned spaceport, and now a frozen mountain pass. Where the ARC came from, what they want, and what the “Exodus” that preceded the collapse really was is the lore the community has spent a year reconstructing from environmental storytelling, vendor dialogue, and trader quests — a deliberately withheld mythology in the tradition of Dark Souls and Destiny, and one of the game’s most-searched topics for exactly that reason.

The Bestiary: Wasps to Matriarchs

The ARC are the game’s real antagonists, and learning them is the skill ceiling. Small flyers like the Wasp and Hornet harass; the Leaper closes distance fast; the Rocketeer and the walking fortress Bastion punish exposure; and the Queen and Matriarch are raid-defining events that empty a map’s players toward or away from them. Each has weak points, loot tables, and tells, and the enemy guides that dominate search results exist because killing them efficiently is the difference between extracting rich and extracting at all. Frozen Trail adds three more — the aggressive Bully, the flanking Skulker, and the Hydra, a stationary Frigate turret fought in three sections.

Thirty Minutes Topside

A raid lasts up to thirty minutes: drop in, loot, fight or avoid ARC and other Raiders, and leave through an extraction elevator, metro station, air shaft, or key-gated Raider hatch. Die and you lose everything except your safe pocket. Back in Speranza, the loop is crafting, skill and perk trees, workbench upgrades, and vendor quests — and, as of Frozen Trail, a personal Outpost with a Research Workstation that unlocks Amplified Weapons. Crossplay is full across all three platforms, and the matchmaking design is the quiet genius of the game: solo players are matched against solos by default, duos against duos, with an opt-in for solos to brave trio lobbies for higher rewards — structural choices that make the game vastly less punishing than Escape from Tarkov without softening the stakes. Proximity voice chat ties it together, and is the mechanical root of the next section.

Why Is It the Phenomenon?

The genre’s assumption is that every other player is a threat. ARC Raiders’ players, en masse, decided otherwise: the “this experience changed me” threads, the stories of strangers sharing loot, reviving enemies, or escorting new players to extraction, became the game’s marketing and its culture. The design enables it — proximity chat, loot abundant enough that killing isn’t necessary, ARC threats big enough that cooperation pays, matchmaking that removes the squad-vs-solo terror — but the community sustained it, and reviewers (IGN, GameSpot, Game Informer, Push Square, and Destructoid all at 9/10) called that emergent civility the most surprising thing in 2025’s most surprising hit. It helps that the game is gorgeous, runs well, and sounds extraordinary; Embark’s audio earned award nominations of its own.

The AI-Voice Controversy and the Eurogamer Dissent

Two caveats attach. Eurogamer’s 2/5 — the only major dissent — centered on the AI text-to-speech NPC voice lines, which it found flat; Embark, criticized earlier for the same practice in The Finals, said the lines were generated from hired actors’ recordings under contract rather than generative AI, Nexon’s CEO declared that “every game company is now using AI,” and in March 2026 Embark’s Patrick Söderlund confirmed some lines had been re-recorded with human actors after launch because of the quality gap. The second caveat is cadence: in May 2026 Embark announced a shift to two major updates a year, starting with Frozen Trail — a change a vocal share of the community received badly after the fast early-patch tempo.

Frozen Trail and Year Two

Released October 8, 2026, Frozen Trail is the first of those biannual updates and the game’s biggest yet: Pendola Pass, a layered snowbound settlement and Exodus transport hub described as the largest map so far; the Outpost system; a reworked skill tree built to make specialization matter; the Stiletto battle rifle and Bantam revolver; weapon Amplification for fifteen weapons at launch; and new free and premium passes. It lands three weeks before the game’s first anniversary on October 30 — the moment at which this card will be revisited, once the update’s reception and the anniversary’s numbers are in.

Where to Play It Today

ARC Raiders is on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S at $40, with full crossplay and cross-progression, no free-to-play tier, and cosmetic-only monetization through optional passes. The community’s standing advice for newcomers is the same one that made the game famous: queue solo, bring a microphone, and say hello before you shoot.
