Grand Theft Auto III is a 2001 open-world action-adventure game developed by DMA Design (which was shortly after renamed Rockstar North) and published by Rockstar Games. Released in October 2001 for the PlayStation 2 (and subsequently ported to the PC, Xbox, mobile devices, and modernized via the 2021 Definitive Edition), it is widely considered one of the most important and revolutionary video games in history. It completely shattered the boundaries of game design, almost single-handedly inventing the modern 3D open-world sandbox genre.
Core Concept and Story
Set in the gloomy, rain-slicked, and heavily industrialized metropolis of Liberty City (a highly cynical, satirical parody of New York City) in the year 2001, the game takes a massive leap from the top-down 2D perspective of its predecessors into a fully realized 3D environment.
You play as a silent protagonist (later officially named Claude in San Andreas). During a high-stakes bank heist, Claude is violently betrayed and shot by his girlfriend and accomplice, Catalina. After surviving the attack and escaping from a police transport van during a bridge explosion, Claude is left stranded in Liberty City with absolutely nothing. Driven purely by revenge, he begins taking odd jobs from corrupt cops, street gangs, the Yakuza, and the Leone mafia family, slowly and ruthlessly climbing his way to the top of the city’s criminal underworld to track Catalina down.
Gameplay and Features
GTA III fundamentally changed how players interacted with video games by offering an unprecedented level of absolute, unscripted freedom:
- The 3D Sandbox: Before GTA III, most 3D games were heavily linear. Liberty City was a living, breathing ecosystem. Pedestrians walked the streets, dynamic weather rolled in, and day turned to night. Players could ignore the main story entirely just to drive around, steal ambulances to do vigilante missions, or see how long they could survive against the police.
- The Wanted Level System: The game refined the iconic “star” system. Committing crimes in the open world organically drew police attention. A one-star wanted level meant a single cop might chase you on foot, but causing massive chaos would escalate the response to SWAT teams, FBI agents, and eventually the military rolling down the streets in tanks.
- Emergent Gameplay: Because the city was physics-based, players could approach missions however they wanted. If you were told to assassinate a target, you could engage them in a massive shootout, use a sniper rifle from a rooftop, or simply rig their parked car with a bomb and wait down the street.
- The Radio Stations: The game introduced the iconic GTA radio dial. When players stole a car, they could listen to a fully produced soundtrack spanning pop, reggae, classical, and trance, alongside the legendary “Chatterbox FM”—a hilarious, fully voiced talk radio station hosted by Lazlow Jones that constantly satirized American culture.
The Moral Panic and Legacy
Grand Theft Auto III was a massive, industry-shaking commercial success, but it also triggered a colossal mainstream moral panic.
Because the game allowed players to engage in highly realistic, unscripted violence—most notoriously, the ability to pick up a sex worker to regain health and then run them over to take your money back—it became the primary target of politicians, news networks, and activists like Jack Thompson. It sparked nationwide debates about video game violence and censorship, ultimately solidifying Rockstar’s reputation as the “bad boy” provocateurs of the gaming industry.
