Grand Theft Auto IV (also known as GTA IV) is a 2008 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It is the eleventh main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series and the fourth numbered title. Set in the gritty, satirical open world of Liberty City (a detailed reimagining of New York City), the game follows Niko Bellic, an Eastern European war veteran and immigrant who arrives in America chasing the “American Dream” only to be dragged into a world of organized crime, betrayal, and revenge. With a darker, more mature tone than previous entries, Grand Theft Auto IV is celebrated for its compelling story, memorable characters, realistic physics, and immersive living city.

The single-player campaign follows Niko as he reconnects with his cousin Roman, works for various mob bosses and criminal figures, and confronts his violent past. Two major story expansions — The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony — expand the narrative with new protagonists (Johnny Klebitz and Luis Lopez) and were later bundled together with the base game as Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition.

Gameplay

Grand Theft Auto IV is played from a third-person perspective in a massive, densely populated open world. Players can freely explore Liberty City’s boroughs (Broker, Dukes, Bohan, Algonquin, and Alderney), engage in main story missions, side jobs, random encounters, street races, vigilante missions, and countless distractions like bowling, darts, pool, and strip clubs.

Key gameplay innovations include:

  • The revolutionary Euphoria physics engine for incredibly realistic character movement, ragdoll effects, and vehicle crashes.
  • A refined cover-based shooting system, melee combat, and a wide variety of weapons and vehicles.
  • Dynamic day-night cycle, realistic traffic AI, and a living radio station soundtrack with licensed music and talk radio.
  • A morality system where player choices affect relationships and minor story branches.
  • Multiplayer modes supporting up to 16–32 players (depending on platform) with deathmatches, races, co-op, and free roam.

The Complete Edition includes both DLC episodes, which add new storylines, vehicles, weapons, and gameplay features without altering the core campaign.

Development and Legacy

Development took over three years and pushed the limits of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 hardware with the new Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE). Directed by Leslie Benzies with writing by Dan Houser, Rupert Humphries, and others, the game featured groundbreaking motion-captured performances and a star-studded voice cast (including Michael Hollick as Niko Bellic). It was Rockstar’s most ambitious project at the time, emphasizing realism, satire, and emotional depth over pure chaos.

Upon release, Grand Theft Auto IV received universal critical acclaim, won numerous Game of the Year awards, and shattered sales records (selling over 25 million copies by 2011). It is frequently ranked among the greatest video games ever made for its storytelling, world-building, and technical achievements. While it lacks the endless live-service content of Grand Theft Auto V’s Online mode, its influence on open-world design and narrative-driven games remains massive. In 2026 the PC version is still heavily modded by the community for improved visuals, while the console versions remain playable via backward compatibility on Xbox Series X/S (with FPS boost).

Key Features:

  • Gritty, Cinematic Story — A mature, character-driven narrative with moral choices, dark humor, and emotional weight.
  • Living, Breathing Liberty City — One of the most detailed and immersive open worlds in gaming history.
  • Realistic Physics & Combat — Euphoria engine, advanced cover system, and emergent gameplay moments.
  • Two Major ExpansionsThe Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony (included in The Complete Edition).
  • Iconic Soundtrack & Radio — Legendary licensed music, talk shows, and in-game radio stations.
  • High Replayability — Multiple endings, side content, collectibles, and robust multiplayer.
