Dan Houser Is Deliberately Skipping GTA 6 Gameplay Coverage

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser says he has not watched the 27-minute GTA 6 gameplay showcase that premiered on Netflix in August 2026, and he intends to keep it that way, explaining that consuming material related to games he isn’t working on has always threatened to derail his creative focus.

A Habit Built Over a Full Career

Speaking on Variety’s Strictly Business podcast, Houser was straightforward about his reasoning. “I haven’t seen it yet. I will try and avoid it because I always try and avoid stuff that’s going to distract or disrupt me creatively,” he said, according to Dexerto. He added that his instinct is always to look forward at new approaches rather than sit and compare what he might have done differently.

This is not a stance he adopted after leaving Rockstar. Once work on Red Dead Redemption got underway, Houser cut out Westerns entirely. He also held off on watching The Sopranos for years, only getting to it after his 2020 departure from the studio. “It’s so good that it would have disrupted everything I did on GTA, had I watched at the time,” he said.

His Connection to the Series

Houser wrote and produced every mainline GTA release through GTA 5, along with Red Dead Redemption 2, before stepping away from Rockstar in 2020. His brother Sam continues to lead the studio. Houser has previously noted that the story in GTA 6 is not one he wrote, making this the first entry in the franchise developed entirely without his involvement.

That distance appears deliberate on both sides. Houser did not frame his decision to avoid the footage as emotional or competitive, but purely as a function of how he has always protected his own creative process.

Moving Forward With Absurd Ventures

Houser is currently developing two open-world games at his new studio, Absurd Ventures. He told Variety that he rarely plays other open-world titles now for much the same reason he avoids watching them. “I can almost deconstruct the strengths and weaknesses of the team in real time and it’s distracting,” he said, describing how he finds himself breaking down animation quality and game design decisions rather than simply experiencing the product.

He also acknowledged that whatever Absurd Ventures releases will be held up against GTA. “Hopefully, on some level there could be no greater compliment,” he said when asked about the inevitable comparisons. It is a measured take from someone who built one of the most commercially successful franchises in the history of the medium and is now charting a separate path entirely.
