Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a 2020 action role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. Serving as the twelfth major installment in the franchise, Valhalla concludes the ancient “mythological RPG” trilogy that began with Origins and Odyssey. The game masterfully blends the sprawling, open-world RPG mechanics of its immediate predecessors with a much heavier emphasis on the classic lore, stealth systems, and overarching narrative of the older titles.
Set primarily in the year 873 AD during the Viking expansion into the British Isles, players step into the boots of Eivor Varinsdottir, a fierce Viking raider of the Raven Clan. Driven from the harsh, freezing mountains of Norway by endless war and dwindling resources, Eivor and their adoptive brother Sigurd lead their clan across the North Sea to the lush, fractured kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England. To secure a permanent home, Eivor must forge vital alliances with local kings and chieftains, conduct brutal raids on wealthy monasteries, and fight back against the encroaching forces of King Aelfred of Wessex. Along the way, Eivor is gifted a Hidden Blade by two foreign Assassins (known as the Hidden Ones) and becomes entangled in their ancient war against the Order of the Ancients, who have secretly infiltrated the English nobility.
Gameplay
Valhalla retains the heavy RPG progression and vast open world of Odyssey but significantly grounds the combat and progression systems to fit the brutal, heavy nature of Viking warfare, while also reintroducing several classic stealth mechanics.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Settlement Building: The core of the game revolves around Ravensthorpe, the player’s growing settlement in England. Instead of a purely linear progression, players must raid for raw materials to construct barracks, blacksmiths, tattoo parlors, and Hidden Ones bureaus, which in turn unlock new quests, features, and story arcs.
- Visceral Dual-Wielding Combat: The combat system is the heaviest and most brutal in the franchise. Players can dual-wield almost any combination of weapons—axes, swords, flails, and even two heavy shields. The game features a stamina meter, a stun system that opens enemies up to devastating cinematic finishers, and a robust dismemberment mechanic.
- Raids and River Assaults: Utilizing the clan’s longship, players can seamlessly navigate the rivers of England. By blowing their war horn, Eivor can call their crew to storm fortified monasteries and Saxon military camps, initiating massive, chaotic skirmishes to steal wealth and supplies.
- Return of Classic Stealth: Valhalla brings back “social stealth.” Eivor can don a cloak and pull up their hood to blend in with crowds, sit on benches, and avoid the gaze of Saxon guards in hostile cities. Additionally, the Hidden Blade returns; players can turn on a setting that allows for guaranteed one-hit assassinations, or utilize a timing-based mini-game to take down high-level targets from the shadows.
- World Events and Exploration: Traditional, bloated quest logs were replaced by a more organic “World Event” system. Exploring the map reveals blue dots that lead to short, self-contained, and often bizarre or humorous encounters that do not clog the player’s UI.
Development and Legacy
Developed by the core Ubisoft Montreal team responsible for Black Flag and Origins, Valhalla faced a challenging production cycle exacerbated by the global COVID-19 pandemic. A major goal for the narrative team, led by franchise veteran Darby McDevitt, was to bridge the gap between the RPG era and the classic games. Valhalla is deeply steeped in Assassin’s Creed lore, cleverly tying together the origins of the Templar Order, the fate of the First Civilization (Isu), and the reincarnation of Norse gods (like Odin, Thor, and Loki) in a way that fundamentally recontextualizes the entire franchise.
The modern-day storyline also reaches a massive climax. Layla Hassan’s arc comes to an end in a sequence that directly connects back to Desmond Miles and the cataclysmic events of Assassin’s Creed III, providing closure for long-time fans while setting the stage for the future of the series.
Released in November 2020 as a major launch title for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles, Valhalla was an absolute commercial juggernaut. It became the highest-earning game in the history of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, generating over $1 billion in revenue. Ubisoft supported the game with an unprecedented two full years of robust post-launch content, including massive expansions like Wrath of the Druids (Ireland), The Siege of Paris (Francia), and the mythology-focused Dawn of Ragnarök, cementing its status as one of the publisher’s most successful releases ever.
