Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a 2023 action-adventure game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts, released April 28, 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with late PS4/Xbox One ports following in 2024. It holds a Metacritic score of 85 on PS5 and Xbox — but 74 on PC, and that eleven-point gap is the launch story in miniature: reviewers repeatedly reached for “The Empire Strikes Back of the series” to describe the game itself, while its PC port became one of 2023’s most notorious technical launches. Digitally, it opened more than 30% ahead of Fallen Order‘s launch.

Five years on, Cal is a wanted man running Rebellion-adjacent sabotage as his old crew scatters — until a job gone wrong strands him on the frontier world Koboh, reuniting him with BD-1’s found family and pulling him into the wake of Dagan Gera, a High Republic-era Jedi awakened from centuries in stasis, obsessed with the hidden planet Tanalorr. The story runs darker than its predecessor’s — betrayal from within the crew, Cal’s flirtation with the dark side, and a body count among the cast that reviewers consistently ranked among the boldest writing EA’s Star Wars era attempted. Monaghan’s performance, again motion-captured, carried much of the acclaim.

Five Stances and a Real Open World-ish

Combat expands from two lightsaber forms to five full stances — single, double-bladed, dual wield, the Kylo-style crossguard, and the fan-favorite blaster stance — with two equippable at once, each a distinct playstyle rather than a moveset skin. Koboh functions as a genuine hub-world with rancor-tier optional bosses, settlements that repopulate with recruited NPCs, extensive real cosmetic customization (the poncho memes were heard), and traversal upgraded with mounts, ascension cables, and air dashes. Critics called it bigger and better in nearly every system — the “trade-offs” clause in most reviews pointed one direction only.

The PC Port Problem

Launch-week PC performance — shader stutter, CPU bottlenecks even on flagship hardware, sub-720p internal resolutions in PS5 performance mode — dominated coverage and dragged the PC Metascore eleven points under the consoles’. EA apologized; a long patch series through 2023-24 substantially repaired PC and console performance alike, and the late PS4/Xbox One ports shipped in far better shape than the launch build. The lasting community advice on the perennial “is it fixed now?” question: largely yes — with the caveat that PC shader stutter never fully vanished on some configurations.

Reception and the Road to the Trilogy’s End

On consoles, Survivor reviewed as the best Star Wars game in a generation — “best in the franchise since KOTOR” appeared more than once — with GOTY-contender framing undercut only by the technical launch. Director Stig Asmussen left Respawn in 2024, but EA has confirmed the trilogy’s concluding game is in development with the Jedi team continuing under new leadership.
