Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic
PC,
PS5,
Xbox Series X/S
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is an upcoming, highly anticipated single-player action RPG developed by Arcanaut Studios and published in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Announced at The Game Awards in December 2025, the game immediately generated massive hype due to its director: Casey Hudson, the legendary original project director behind BioWare’s 2003 masterpiece, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR), and the Mass Effect trilogy.
Set during the tail end of the Old Republic era—long before the events of the Skywalker Saga—the game is officially described as a “spiritual successor” to KOTOR. It is not a direct sequel or a remake, but rather a completely fresh story designed to reboot the Old Republic concept for the modern canon. The narrative follows a Force user on a journey through a galaxy “on the edge of rebirth,” allowing players to make profound choices that will define their path toward the Light or Dark side of the Force.
Gameplay
Because the game is currently in early development (built on Unreal Engine 5), extensive gameplay footage has not yet been shown. However, based on the cinematic trailers and official interviews, it is shifting away from the classic Dungeons & Dragons-style dice-roll mechanics of the original KOTOR in favor of modern systems.
Key anticipated gameplay mechanics include:
- Player Agency and Morality: The beating heart of the game. Player choices, faction alignments, and narrative decisions will dictate the protagonist’s alignment with the Light or Dark side, likely leading to drastically different story branches, abilities, and endings.
- Modern Action Combat: Official press releases describe the gameplay as featuring “heart-pounding combat,” suggesting a real-time, action-oriented approach to lightsaber duels and Force powers (similar to the Jedi series or modern action-RPGs).
- Party Dynamics: The debut cinematic trailer subtly hinted at a three-person party system, heavily implying a return to the classic BioWare squad structure where players recruit diverse companions, manage their gear, and explore their individual loyalty storylines.
- Galactic Exploration: Players will reportedly travel across multiple planets in a personal cruiser (reminiscent of the Ebon Hawk or Normandy), exploring a mix of familiar and entirely new worlds in the Star Wars galaxy.
Development and Status
The announcement of Fate of the Old Republic sent shockwaves through the Star Wars fandom. For over a decade, fans had been begging for a return to the single-player, choice-driven RPG style of KOTOR. While a separate KOTOR Remake has suffered from years of highly publicized development hell, Arcanaut Studios’ original project offers a clean slate under the guidance of the man who created the original 2003 formula.
By early 2026, the studio was actively staffing up, notably hiring Pascal Blanche (former Art Director for Dead by Daylight) to lead the game’s visual direction. While the game is still years away from hitting shelves, Casey Hudson has publicly stated that the team is targeting a release window “before 2030.”
