Star Wars: Galactic Racer is the highly anticipated arcade racer-adventure currently slated for an October 6, 2026 release. Developed by Fuse Games and published by Secret Mode in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, it represents the first major return to the “high-stakes racing” genre for the franchise since the Racer games of the early 2000s.
While you’ve been on a roll with classic RTS titles lately, Galactic Racer is a departure from the “eye-in-the-sky” strategy. It is built on Unreal Engine 5 and focuses on the lawless, runs-based circuit of the Outer Rim. In our current 2026 timeline, it is currently one of the most wishlisted games on Steam and consoles following its deep-dive gameplay reveal earlier this month.
Overview: The Galactic League
Set in the years following the fall of the Empire, the galaxy is in a state of chaotic reconstruction. In the vacuum of power, the Galactic League has emerged—an unsanctioned, high-stakes racing circuit funded by rival syndicates. Unlike the formal podracing of the Republic era, the League is “anything goes.”
You play as a rising pilot in the Outer Rim, navigating a rogue-lite campaign where you must survive “runs” through dangerous territories, winning over sponsors and upgrading your craft while avoiding the remnants of Imperial warlords and local crime lords.
Gameplay: Skill, Not Sabers
The core philosophy of Galactic Racer is “No Force, no prophecy—just skill.” It eschews the typical Jedi-centric narrative for a gritty, mechanical focus on piloting.
- Runs-Based Rogue-lite: The campaign is structured around “Tournaments” that function like rogue-lite runs. Each leg of the race offers different branching paths, environmental hazards (like ion storms or asteroid showers), and “Syndicate Deals” that provide temporary buffs or high-risk challenges.
- The Repulsorcraft Classes: The game features a wide variety of vehicles, from nimble swoop bikes and heavy-duty combat speeders to the return of the iconic Podracers. Each class has distinct physics; speeders handle like drift-cars, while podracers are high-speed “glass cannons” that require extreme precision to keep from overheating.
- Modular Customization: Between runs, you can spend your winnings at the “Scrap Heap” to customize your craft. This includes everything from engine tuning and cooling systems to defensive countermeasures like smoke screens and magnetic mines.
- Direct Combat: This isn’t a “clean” race. Players can use repulsor-shunts to ram opponents into obstacles or deploy tactical gadgets to disable rival engines. The destruction is detailed—Unreal Engine 5 allows for wings to shear off and engines to catch fire realistically in real-time.
Visuals and Atmosphere
The game leans into the “Used Future” aesthetic of the original trilogy. The tracks are located in iconic but gritty locales, from the neon-lit industrial slums of Nar Shaddaa to the treacherous spice mines of Kessel. The sound design is particularly praised in early previews, featuring the signature hum of repulsorlift engines and a “low-fi” industrial soundtrack that moves away from the traditional John Williams orchestral style toward something more modern and rhythmic.
