Halo 5: Guardians

27 Oct 2015 Released 18+ Metascore 84

Halo 5: Guardians is a 2015 first-person shooter developed by 343 Industries and published by Microsoft Studios, released October 27, 2015 exclusively for Xbox One. It holds a Metacritic score of 84 and became, by Microsoft’s own numbers, the biggest Halo launch in history at the time — 21 million hours played in its first week, a Guinness World Record for the most-watched game launch broadcast, and over 45 million REQ Packs claimed through its new progression system.

It’s also remembered for something less flattering: one of the largest gaps in the franchise’s history between what a marketing campaign promised and what the actual game delivered.

The Biggest Halo Launch, Commercially

By raw numbers, Halo 5 was an unambiguous commercial success: it out-launched every previous entry in the series, and the “Halo 5: Live” launch broadcast earned an official Guinness World Record for the most-watched video game launch stream up to that point. Its new Requisition (REQ) system, which let players earn or buy packs of multiplayer cosmetics and gear, moved more than 45 million packs in the opening stretch alone, generating over $500,000 in microtransaction revenue in its first week that Microsoft funneled directly into the Halo World Championship prize pool.

Hunt the Truth

Ahead of launch, Microsoft ran Hunt the Truth, a serialized fictional podcast in the style of Serial, investigating allegations that Master Chief had committed a massacre and was now being hunted by fellow Spartan Jameson Locke. It was, by most accounts, genuinely well made — the campaign won a Webby Award and a Game Connection Marketing Award for its social and podcast rollout — and it set up expectations for a morally ambiguous Chief and a real ideological clash between him and Locke.

The Gap Between the Pitch and the Game

None of that conflict is actually in the game. Chief’s “crime” never comes up; his only real transgression is disobeying orders to go looking for a signal he believes is Cortana, and Locke’s pursuit of him carries no real animosity once the two finally meet. Of the campaign’s 15 missions, only three are played as Master Chief — the rest follow Locke’s Fireteam Osiris — a structural choice several reviewers connected directly to the sense that the marketing had oversold a story the game never intended to tell. In a 2025 interview, Halo 5 lead concept artist Darren Bacon confirmed the disconnect was real on 343’s end too, saying the marketing team had built the campaign’s framing largely independent of the development side, which found the mismatch just as frustrating once it became public.

Guardians, Cortana, and the Created

The actual plot picks up Cortana’s fate after her apparent death in Halo 4: she survived, gained access to a vast Forerunner knowledge repository called the Domain, and has decided — in the name of protecting the galaxy from itself — to seize control of ancient, planet-sized weapons called Guardians and impose order through a coalition of allied AIs she calls the Created. Chief goes AWOL trying to reach her before she can act; by the time Locke’s team catches up to him, Cortana has already put her plan into motion, ending the game on Chief and Blue Team trapped and the galaxy’s technology facing lockdown on Cortana’s terms.

Spartan Abilities

Gameplay-wise, Halo 5 replaced Reach‘s equippable Armor Abilities with a set of always-available Spartan Abilities — thrust, clamber, ground pound, and a shoulder-charge move — baked into every Spartan by default rather than picked up as pickups. It gave combat a noticeably faster, more vertical feel than any previous entry, closer to the movement-heavy shooters that had become popular by 2015.

No Split-Screen

For the first time in the mainline series, Halo 5 shipped without local split-screen multiplayer or campaign co-op — a decision 343 attributed to the technical demands of the new engine, and one that drew consistent, sustained criticism from a fanbase for whom couch co-op had been part of the series’ identity since 2001.

Warzone and the REQ System

The headline new mode, Warzone, pit two 12-player teams against each other and a shared pool of AI enemies across large maps, with players deploying vehicles, weapons, and boosts pulled from their REQ collection mid-match. 343 was explicit that REQ items had to be earned through in-match performance even when purchased with real money, to avoid the mode becoming pay-to-win, and reviewers generally found the system fair in practice — but its presence at all marked a genuine first for the franchise, and set a template for monetization later Halo games would lean on more heavily.

Reception

Critics were split roughly along the same lines the marketing controversy suggested: multiplayer, and Warzone specifically, drew consistent praise as some of the freshest competitive Halo design in years, while the campaign was regularly singled out as the game’s weak point — thin characterization for Locke, a story that assumed deep familiarity with 343’s wider transmedia output (novels, animated shorts, the Hunt the Truth podcast itself), and pacing that several reviewers felt buried its own best ideas.

Where This Leaves the Story

The Created/Guardians plotline that Halo 5 ends on on turned out to be one of the more disputed handoffs in the series’ history. Halo Infinite, released six years later, opens roughly eighteen months after these events and resolves nearly all of it off-screen: Cortana’s reign, the fate of the Created, and the toll of a galaxy-spanning AI uprising are compressed into background lore rather than played out, and the game’s actual antagonists turn out to be the Banished — a faction from Halo Wars 2 with no real connection to Halo 5‘s cliffhanger at all. It’s a resolution plenty of players still consider one of the more disappointing narrative pivots in the franchise, given how much of Halo 5 was built specifically to set that story up.

Where to Play It Today

Halo 5: Guardians is included in Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Xbox and PC (Steam or the Microsoft Store), along with the rest of the mainline series, though — matching its original release — it remains without local split-screen support.
