Halo Studios cinematic director Josh Daniels went from receiving a promotion to losing his job within the span of a single week, a painful sequence he described publicly on LinkedIn as Microsoft presses forward with one of the most disruptive restructuring efforts in Xbox history.

A Promotion That Lasted Days

Daniels shared his situation directly on LinkedIn, writing that being “promoted and laid off in the same week is pretty wild,” according to GamesRadar. He confirmed he was among those affected by the Halo Studios layoffs and said he would be open to conversations about cinematic direction or production roles. Insider Gaming reported that the promotion and the layoff were separated by just one day, making the situation a particularly sharp example of the chaos surrounding the cuts.

268 More Employees Cut Across Xbox

Daniels is one of 268 employees eliminated in the latest round of Xbox layoffs, as IGN reports. Halo Studios appears to have absorbed a significant share of those cuts. Xbox CCO Matt Booty stated the reductions have now brought the company roughly three-quarters of the way through the restructuring plan announced by new CEO Asha Sharma, which targets a total of 3,200 positions. Teams across multiple studios reported reductions, including The Coalition, the developer behind Gears of War: E-Day.

According to Insider Gaming, the layoffs have touched several Xbox-affiliated studios in this latest wave, reflecting how broadly Microsoft is reshaping its game development arm.

Xbox’s Studio Landscape Is Shifting Dramatically

The structural changes at Xbox extend well beyond headcount reductions. As GamesRadar outlines, Ninja Theory and Arkane are facing closures, Obsidian has been folded into Bethesda, Playground Games and Turn 10 have been merged, and Undead Labs is in the process of spinning out as an independent studio. The Halo IP itself has been handed to Activision, meaning Halo Studios never released a single original game before Microsoft redirected the franchise to the Call of Duty publisher.

The cuts have not spared veteran talent. Senior developers with years of experience on franchises like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls have been among those let go, even as Microsoft reportedly pushes Bethesda to accelerate production timelines on both series. The result is a studio roster that looks drastically different from what Xbox maintained less than a year ago, with uncertainty still hanging over those who remain.
