Halo Wars 2
Microsoft Game Studios
Halo Wars 2 (2017) elevated the console-first strategy formula by bringing in a legendary co-developer: Creative Assembly, the masterminds behind the Total War franchise. Working alongside 343 Industries, they preserved the slick, pad-friendly accessibility of the original game while layering in significantly deeper tactical macro-management, a reworked economy, and one of the most compelling modern villains in the entire Halo mythos.
The Banished and the Ark
The narrative takes place 28 years after the original game, right on the heels of Halo 5: Guardians. The crew of the Spirit of Fire awakens from cryosleep to find themselves floating above the Forerunner Ark—the birthplace of the Halo rings.
- Enter Atriox: Humanity isn’t fighting the Covenant this time. Instead, they face The Banished, a fierce, mercenary splinter faction led by the Brute warlord Atriox. Having successfully rebelled against the Covenant at the height of its power, Atriox combines raw Brute strength with scavenged high-tech weaponry, establishing himself as a brutal tactical match for Captain Cutter.
Refined Competitive Strategy
Creative Assembly leaned heavily into their RTS pedigree to tighten the competitive sandbox:
- Leader Power Trees: Instead of simple off-screen cooldowns, leader powers were integrated into a branching skill tree. As the match progresses, you earn points to spend on passive buffs, passive healing, or devastating active drops like Mines, Mac Blasts, or the Banished Erubus strike.
- Base Specialization: While the “socket base” system returned, base economy management was widened. The dynamic between Supplies and Power became much tighter, forcing players to balance early-game unit rushing against teching up to unlock heavy-hitting specialized forces.
- The Roster Expansion: Units became much more distinct. The UNSC gained advanced Cyclops exosuits, stealth Kodiak artillery, and specialized Hellbringer flamethrowers. The Banished deployed heavily armored Marauder tanks, agile Ghost scouts, and terrifying Blisterbacks—living artillery pieces that can switch between air and siege-ground modes.
Awakening the Nightmare
The game’s most significant expansion, Awakening the Nightmare (released in late 2017), provided a massive nostalgia shot for old-school fans.
- The Return of the Flood: Taking place months after the main story, the campaign flips the script, putting players in control of the Banished. While scavenging the ruins of the Covenant holy city High Charity, two Brute brothers accidentally breach the containment shields, unleashing the Flood back onto the Ark.
- Terminus Firefight: This expansion introduced a highly addictive, co-op tower-defense mode where players build walls, automated turrets, and coordinate leader powers to hold off endless waves of Banished, UNSC, and Flood forces.
Summary
Halo Wars 2 is a brilliant evolution that successfully bridged two eras of strategy. It respects the lightning-fast, casual pace required for great console play while satisfying PC purists with improved keyboard-and-mouse mapping and deep asymmetrical balancing. By introducing Atriox and the Banished, it fundamentally changed the trajectory of the broader Halo storyline, creating a rugged, visually spectacular sci-fi strategy game that balances the desperate survival story of the Spirit of Fire against an untamable galactic threat.
