PlayStation Dropped Physint Over Budget and Profitability Fears
PlayStation’s decision to walk away from Kojima Productions’ action-espionage title Physint came down to cold financial math, with sources pointing to missed deadlines, a ballooning budget, and a recurring dispute over exclusivity terms.
What Went Wrong Between PlayStation and Kojima Productions
According to GamesIndustry.biz, sources familiar with the project told Bloomberg that Physint had missed internal deadlines and was on course to run well over budget, despite still being years away from launch. Those factors fed into PlayStation’s broader “concerns over budget, potential profitability, and exclusivity” — a combination that made the platform holder reluctant to commit the kind of funding required to see the project through.
Adding to that friction, the same sources indicated that neither Death Stranding nor its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, hit PlayStation’s revenue targets. That track record made PlayStation unwilling to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into yet another Kojima Productions title that would likely function as a timed exclusive rather than a permanent one.
The Exclusivity History Behind the Decision
PlayStation’s hesitation makes more sense when you look at how the previous Kojima titles played out on other platforms. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Death Stranding launched as a PlayStation exclusive in November 2019, then moved to PC in July 2020 and arrived on Xbox and Amazon Luna in November 2024. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach followed a similar path, launching in June 2025 before heading to PC in March 2026. That pattern of timed exclusivity, combined with underwhelming returns, appears to have been the breaking point for PlayStation’s willingness to invest further.
| Game | PlayStation Launch | PC Release | Xbox / Other |
|---|---|---|---|
| Death Stranding | November 2019 | July 2020 | November 2024 |
| Death Stranding 2: On the Beach | June 2025 | March 2026 | Not announced |
Xbox Steps In as Physint Finds a New Home
Hideo Kojima confirmed last Thursday that his studio received notice from PlayStation in mid-June that the Physint project was being cancelled on their end. PlayStation followed with its own statement acknowledging the split, describing it as “a difficult decision” while insisting its relationship with Kojima Productions “remains strong” and that future collaboration is still on the table.
That future, at least for Physint, now involves Xbox. Kojima Productions already had an existing partnership with Microsoft for the horror title OD, and Physint will extend that working relationship. Xbox’s Sarah Sharma said the company was “honoured” that Kojima chose Xbox to continue development, framing his creative ambition as exactly the kind of project the platform wants to back. Kojima himself noted that the move “expands our relationship with Xbox beyond OD” and reaffirmed the studio’s commitment to redefining the action-espionage genre.
