Death Stranding is a 2019 action-adventure game developed by KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment (with 505 Games handling the PC release). Originally launched for the PlayStation 4 and later expanded into the definitive Director’s Cut for PS5 and PC, it represents an incredibly significant moment in gaming history: it was the legendary Hideo Kojima’s first independent project following his highly publicized, bitter departure from Konami and the Metal Gear franchise.

Core Concept and Story

The game is set in a fractured, post-apocalyptic United States following a cataclysmic event known as the “Death Stranding.” This event violently merged the world of the living with the realm of the dead.

You play as Sam Porter Bridges (portrayed by Norman Reedus), a freelance courier who suffers from aphenphosmphobia (the fear of being touched). The world outside is incredibly hostile. The landscape is haunted by invisible, ghostly entities known as BTs (Beached Things), and the weather itself is deadly—a supernatural rain known as “Timefall” instantly accelerates the aging process of whatever it touches.

With the remnants of humanity driven into isolated, underground bunkers, Sam is tasked by the dying President of the United Cities of America to walk from the East Coast to the West Coast. His mission is to deliver vital supplies and physically connect these isolated settlements to the “Chiral Network,” a massive, supernatural communication grid, effectively rebuilding America one delivery at a time. The game features a massive, star-studded Hollywood cast, including Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, and Troy Baker.

Gameplay and Features

Kojima famously dubbed Death Stranding the first “Strand-type” game, completely redefining open-world mechanics by making the terrain itself the primary antagonist:

  • The Delivery Simulator: The core gameplay loop revolves around extreme hiking and inventory management. Before leaving a base, you must meticulously arrange the cargo on Sam’s back, balancing the weight distribution. When out in the world, you must actively hold the controller’s triggers to grip your backpack straps, maintain Sam’s balance over rocky terrain, manage his stamina, and replace his degrading boots.
  • Asynchronous Multiplayer: While you never physically see other players in your world, you are constantly interacting with them. The game features a brilliant, passive cooperative system where players can construct ladders, climbing ropes, bridges, and eventually paved highways. These structures randomly populate in other players’ worlds, allowing millions of strangers to work together to overcome the harsh environment and leave “Likes” for one another.
  • The Bridge Baby (BB): Because BTs are invisible, Sam carries a “Bridge Baby”—a premature infant suspended in a glowing pod strapped to his chest. The BB connects Sam to the world of the dead, powering a mechanical scanner on his shoulder that points toward nearby ghosts, forcing players to engage in tense, breath-holding stealth segments to avoid being dragged into the tar.
  • Combat as a Last Resort: While Sam does acquire non-lethal weapons to fight off “MULEs” (cargo-obsessed bandits) and eventually anti-BT firearms, combat is heavily discouraged. If Sam kills a human enemy, their body will eventually undergo “necrosis” and trigger a massive, nuclear-sized explosion known as a “Voidout” that leaves a permanent crater in the game world.

Reception and The Pandemic Prescience

Upon its release in late 2019, Death Stranding was one of the most fiercely polarizing AAA games ever made.

A portion of critics and players found the gameplay loop incredibly tedious, labeling it an overgrown, pretentious “Amazon delivery simulator” bogged down by Kojima’s trademark hours-long, convoluted cutscenes. However, the other half of the industry hailed it as an absolute masterpiece, praising its completely original mechanics, breathtaking Icelandic-inspired landscapes, and deeply emotional story.

The game’s legacy took a massive, eerie turn just a few months after its release. When the COVID-19 pandemic triggered global lockdowns in early 2020, Death Stranding’s core themes—a fractured society trapped inside, relying entirely on essential delivery workers for survival, and the desperate yearning for human connection—felt incredibly prescient. As a result, the game experienced a massive critical reappraisal, cementing its status as a uniquely brilliant piece of interactive art.

Quick Note

Death Stranding is a bizarre, deeply melancholic, and entirely uncompromising vision.

In short: It requires immense patience. If you want fast-paced action and instant gratification, the slow, agonizing hikes of the first ten hours will completely break you. But if you surrender to its deliberate pacing, it offers one of the most highly rewarding, weirdly therapeutic, and community-driven experiences in the history of the medium.
