Star Wars: Bounty Hunter is a third-person action-adventure game originally developed and published by LucasArts. It first launched in late 2002 for the PlayStation 2 and GameCube. Over two decades later, the game was fully remastered and modernized by Aspyr, releasing on August 1, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
Core Concept and Story
Set approximately ten years before the events of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, the game serves as the definitive, canonical (at the time) origin story for the galaxy’s most notorious mercenary, Jango Fett.
The narrative is initiated by Darth Tyranus (Count Dooku), who hires Jango to hunt down an unpredictable, deranged Dark Jedi named Komari Vosa and dismantle her fanatical criminal syndicate, the Bando Gora. However, the bounty is secretly a test. Dooku is evaluating Jango’s skills to see if he is worthy of becoming the genetic template for the Republic’s secret clone army. For Star Wars lore enthusiasts, the game is a massive treat: it explains exactly how Jango met his shape-shifting partner Zam Wesell, how he acquired his iconic ship (the Slave I), and why he was chosen by the Sith.
Gameplay and Features
The game is a pure, early-2000s action platformer that heavily focuses on mobility and relentless run-and-gun combat:
- The Jetpack: This is the absolute star of the game. Once acquired, Jango’s jetpack allows for significant vertical exploration and platforming. Because fuel is strictly limited and recharges when you land, players have to carefully manage their thrusts to navigate deadly chasms and massive industrial areas.
- A Mandalorian’s Arsenal: Jango is heavily armed. His primary weapons are his dual Westar-34 blaster pistols, which feature a highly generous auto-lock-on system, allowing you to run, fly, and shoot simultaneously. You also gain access to his flamethrower, toxic darts, and whipcord.
- The Bounty System: As a bounty hunter, your job isn’t just mindlessly killing. The game features a secondary system where you must equip your tactical visor to scan crowds of NPCs mid-combat. If an enemy has a bounty on their head, you can tag them, ensnare them with your whipcord, and capture them alive for bonus galactic credits.
The 2024 Aspyr Remaster and Legacy
For years, Bounty Hunter was remembered fondly for its incredible lore and cutscenes, but criticized for its notoriously frustrating PS2-era camera and clunky controls.
When Aspyr released the remaster in August 2024, it successfully ironed out the biggest technical frustrations of the original. The remaster boosted the game to 60fps, overhauled the lighting, and finally implemented modern, dual-stick camera controls. It also added heavily requested quality-of-life features, like a dedicated flashlight for dark areas and the ability to slow down time while scanning targets with your visor. As a fun bonus, achieving 100% completion in the remaster unlocks a fully playable Boba Fett skin.
However, the reception to the 2024 release was Mixed. Critics and modern players noted that while the visual and control upgrades are great, the underlying game design has aged poorly. The level design is highly linear and repetitive, and forcing players to constantly pause chaotic firefights to scan random enemies for bounties severely damages the game’s pacing.
Quick Note
Star Wars: Bounty Hunter is a flawed but charming nostalgic trip into the prequel era.
In short: By modern action-game standards, its combat loop is repetitive and its mechanics are noticeably dated. But if you are a massive Star Wars fan who wants to slap on a jetpack, dual-wield blasters, and experience the crucial backstory of Jango Fett, the 2024 remaster is undeniably the best, most playable way to experience this classic piece of expanded universe history.
