Assassin’s Creed Mirage is a 2023 action-adventure stealth video game developed primarily by Ubisoft Bordeaux and published by Ubisoft. Serving as the thirteenth major installment in the franchise, Mirage was specifically designed as a love letter to the series’ origins, releasing as part of the franchise’s 15th-anniversary celebration. In a stark departure from the massive, hundreds-of-hours-long RPG epics of Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, Mirage strips away the sprawling open worlds and heavy role-playing mechanics to deliver a tight, narrative-driven, classic stealth experience.
Set in the 9th century during the Islamic Golden Age, the game takes place primarily in a breathtakingly recreated, densely populated Baghdad. The story serves as a direct prequel to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, following the origins of Basim Ibn Ishaq. Beginning as a young, cunning street thief haunted by terrifying nightmares, Basim is recruited by the Hidden Ones (the precursors to the Assassin Brotherhood). Under the tutelage of his stern mentor, Roshan, Basim journeys to the Hidden Ones’ fortress of Alamut to learn their ancient creed. He then returns to Baghdad to dismantle the shadowy Order of the Ancients, whose influence has corrupted the city’s caliphate, all while uncovering the dark, complex truth about his own identity and destiny.
Gameplay
Mirage represents a deliberate return to the core pillars that defined the original games: parkour, stealth, and assassinations. It completely removes the dialogue choices, level-gating, massive skill trees, and randomized loot systems of the RPG era.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- A Return to Stealth: Open combat is actively discouraged. Basim is a fragile, traditional Assassin, not a Viking warrior. If surrounded by heavily armored guards, players are meant to use smoke bombs, flee, and break the line of sight rather than fighting their way out.
- Classic Tools: Basim relies on a highly upgradable suite of classic Assassin tools to manipulate the environment and enemy AI, including throwing knives, smoke bombs, blowdarts, noisemakers, and traps.
- Investigative Assassinations: The “Black Box” assassination missions return. To eliminate high-ranking Order members, Basim must conduct investigations across Baghdad to uncover their identities. Once revealed, players infiltrate heavily guarded fortresses, looking for stolen keys, secret entrances, or unique contextual assassination opportunities.
- Assassin’s Focus: A new, stylized ability that allows Basim to chain together multiple rapid-fire stealth kills. By slowing down time, players can target several enemies in range; Basim then executes them in a blur of rapid motion, a visual representation of his extreme speed and lethal efficiency.
- Dense Urban Parkour: Because Baghdad is a massive, multi-tiered urban environment with narrow alleys, flat rooftops, and countless ropes and pulleys, the parkour system is much faster and more vertical than the wilderness traversal of Valhalla. The beloved corner-swing mechanics and pole-vaulting make a return.
- Notoriety System: A classic, three-tiered notoriety system is back. Committing crimes in plain sight causes civilians to call for the guards, archers to man the rooftops, and eventually, elite Shakiriyya mercenaries to hunt Basim down. Players must tear down wanted posters or bribe the Munadi (town criers) to lower their heat.
Development and Legacy
Assassin’s Creed Mirage began its development life as a planned story expansion for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. However, Ubisoft quickly realized the concept of exploring Basim’s origins in the Middle East—the original geographic setting of the very first Assassin’s Creed—had the potential to be a standalone title. Ubisoft Bordeaux took the lead, heavily modifying the Anvil engine used for Valhalla to accommodate a denser city and faster parkour animations.
The development team worked closely with historical experts to recreate 9th-century Baghdad, a city that was largely destroyed by the Mongols in 1258. They also implemented a full Arabic voice-over option to enhance the historical immersion, a first for the franchise. The game notably featured acclaimed actress Shohreh Aghdashloo as the voice of Roshan, providing one of the most memorable vocal performances in the series.
Upon its release in October 2023, Mirage was praised for successfully delivering the nostalgic, old-school Assassin’s Creed experience that a vocal segment of the fanbase had been demanding for years. Critics commended its gorgeous recreation of Baghdad, its focused 15-to-20-hour runtime, and its strict emphasis on stealth over action. While some noted that the underlying Valhalla engine made the combat feel slightly clunky and the parkour somewhat restricted compared to the fluidity of Unity, Mirage was celebrated as a successful, refreshing palate cleanser for the franchise.
