Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced sets sail this July, but throws multiplayer overboard

Thirteen years after Edward Kenway first drunkenly stumbled into the Assassin Brotherhood, Ubisoft has finally confirmed the worst-kept secret on the Seven Seas. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a full, from-the-ground-up remake of the 2013 pirate classic, and it’s dropping anchor on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on 9th July 2026.

Helmed by Ubisoft Singapore—with a number of original developers returning to the rigging—this isn’t a simple upscaling job. Resynced has been completely rebuilt using the latest iteration of the Anvil engine (the very same tech powering Assassin’s Creed Shadows). Ubisoft is promising a total visual overhaul complete with ray-traced global illumination, dense tropical jungles, dynamic storms that genuinely alter how the Jackdaw handles, and—crucially—new sea shanties.

But before you start worrying that Edward’s streamlined Caribbean adventure has been bloated into a 200-hour, level-gated loot-fest, game director Richard Knight has issued a reassuring message. “This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience,” Knight noted during this week’s reveal showcase. “It is not an RPG.”

Instead, Ubisoft seems to have focused on smoothing out the barnacles of the 2013 original. Combat has been noticeably tightened; the old ‘wait and counter-kill’ routine has been replaced by a faster, more fluid system requiring perfect parries and four-chained takedowns. Parkour has also seen a welcome spruce-up, bringing back much-missed manual wall ejects to make clambering around Havana feel significantly less clunky.

Most importantly, however, Resynced fixes the greatest nightmare of the Xbox 360 era: tailing missions. You can finally crouch freely, and if a target spots your pinky toe while you’re eavesdropping from a bush, it will no longer result in an immediate, controller-snapping desynchronisation. Instead, the AI will react dynamically, allowing you to salvage the mission through other (presumably more violent) means.

On the high seas, the Jackdaw itself is getting a refit. Every naval weapon now has an alternate fire mode, and you’ll be able to recruit three new bespoke officers to your crew—Lucy Baldwin, The Padre, and Deadman Smith—each bringing their own questlines and special ship abilities. Existing fan-favourite historical figures like Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet are also getting expanded narrative arcs, scored to new original music from Woodkid. Oh, and you can now have a pet monkey or cat on your ship, which frankly justifies the asking price on its own.

It isn’t all rum and sunshine, however. In its laser-focus on Edward’s standalone journey, Ubisoft has confirmed two major casualties of the remake process. The game’s beloved, surprisingly tense cat-and-mouse multiplayer mode is entirely absent. More bafflingly, the remake will not include the excellent Freedom Cry DLC, meaning Adéwalé’s phenomenal story has been left stranded on older hardware.

Still, if you’ve been itching to get back to the Golden Age of Piracy without your eyes watering at 2013-era textures, this looks to be the definitive way to do it. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on 9th July across PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
