Assassin’s Creed Rogue
Where to buy
Assassin’s Creed Rogue is a 2014 action-adventure stealth video game developed primarily by Ubisoft Sofia and published by Ubisoft. Serving as the seventh major installment in the franchise, Rogue holds a unique place in the series’ history. It was released on the exact same day as Assassin’s Creed Unity; while Unity was built exclusively for the then-new PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, Rogue was designed as the final send-off for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 generation.
Thematically and narratively, Rogue is one of the darkest entries in the series, offering players the rare opportunity to experience the ancient war from the perspective of the Templar Order. Set during the French and Indian War (the North American theater of the Seven Years’ War) in the mid-18th century, it bridges the narrative gap between Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed III, while also directly setting up the prologue of Unity.
The story follows Shay Patrick Cormac, a brash and talented young Assassin. During a mission to recover a First Civilization artifact in Lisbon, Shay inadvertently triggers a massive, catastrophic earthquake that destroys the city and kills tens of thousands of innocents. Horrified that the Assassins would blindly pursue dangerous artifacts at the cost of human life, Shay defects. He is eventually taken in by the Templar Order (led by Haytham Kenway from AC III) and becomes a ruthless Assassin Hunter, dedicating his life to systematically tracking down and eliminating his former brothers and mentors.
Gameplay
Rogue borrows heavily from the mechanics established in Black Flag, taking the acclaimed naval combat and land-based exploration and tweaking it to fit the frigid environments of the North Atlantic and the perspective of a Templar.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- The Morrigan: Shay captains the Morrigan, a nimble sloop-of-war. Because she navigates the icy waters of the North Atlantic and the narrow, winding rivers of the American interior, the ship is highly maneuverable. It is equipped with new Templar weaponry, including burning oil to leave a trail of fire on the water, high-speed Puckle guns (replacing the swivel guns), and an ice ram to shatter through frozen waterways.
- The Hunted Becomes the Hunter: Because Shay is fighting the Assassins, players are subjected to the franchise’s own stealth mechanics. Enemy Assassins hide in hay bales, blend with crowds, and stalk Shay from the rooftops. Players must listen for distinct “whispers” and use an Eagle Vision compass to detect and preemptively counter Assassin ambushes.
- Templar Arsenal: Reflecting the Templars’ vast wealth and advanced technology, Shay is equipped with an experimental Air Rifle. This silent weapon can shoot sleep, berserk, and firecracker darts to distract guards. It can also be upgraded with a grenade launcher attachment to fire shrapnel and sleep gas across wide areas.
- Three Distinct Regions: The open world is split into three massive zones: the freezing, iceberg-laden North Atlantic Ocean; the lush, winding River Valley of upstate New York; and a fully reimagined, densely packed 18th-century New York City.
Development and Legacy
Developed by Ubisoft Sofia (the team behind the acclaimed Liberation spin-off), Rogue was designed to wrap up the “Kenway Saga” that began with Assassin’s Creed III. The development team heavily reused assets, animations, and the engine from Black Flag, leading some critics to initially dismiss the game as a glorified expansion pack.
However, upon release, Rogue received high praise from fans and critics for its narrative. By painting the Assassins as dangerously dogmatic and the Templars as pragmatic peacekeepers, the game provided a much-needed gray area to a lore that had previously been very black-and-white. The modern-day storyline, once again viewed from the first-person perspective of an Abstergo Entertainment employee, further expanded on this reversed perspective.
While it was initially overshadowed by the massive hype (and subsequent technical controversy) surrounding the simultaneous launch of Unity, Rogue eventually garnered a strong cult following. It is widely regarded as having one of the best stories in the franchise, successfully delivering the ultimate “what if” scenario for long-time fans.
