Assassin’s Creed Unity
Where to buy
Assassin’s Creed Unity is a 2014 action-adventure stealth video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. Serving as the eighth major installment in the series, it was a massive technological leap designed exclusively for the eighth generation of consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One). Moving away from the naval-focused, multi-region exploration of the “Kenway Saga,” Unity returned the franchise to its roots with a hyper-dense, single-city urban environment: Paris during the bloody upheaval of the French Revolution in 1789.
The narrative follows Arno Victor Dorian, an aristocratic youth who is orphaned twice—first when his biological Assassin father is killed, and again years later when his adoptive Templar father is murdered. Framed for the second murder and thrown into the Bastille, Arno discovers his Assassin heritage and joins the Parisian Brotherhood to seek redemption and uncover the true conspirators behind the killings. Complicating his quest is his lifelong romance with Élise de la Serre, his childhood friend and adoptive sister, who is revealed to be a high-ranking Templar. Their star-crossed relationship forms the emotional core of the story as Paris burns around them.
Gameplay
Unity introduced a completely rebuilt iteration of the Anvil engine, resulting in fundamental overhauls to movement, stealth, and combat. The goal was to make the core pillars of the franchise more challenging, fluid, and player-driven.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Controlled Parkour: The traversal system was completely redesigned. For the first time, players were given a dedicated “Parkour Down” button, allowing Arno to fluidly and safely descend massive buildings without relying on conveniently placed hay bales or taking fall damage.
- Black Box Assassinations: Major assassination targets are presented in open-ended “Black Box” missions. Players are dropped into massive, highly guarded environments (like Notre-Dame or the Palais du Louvre) and must scout for infiltration points, steal keys, create distractions, or discover unique, cinematic “special assassination” opportunities to eliminate their target however they choose.
- Dedicated Stealth: Unity finally introduced a dedicated crouch button and a cover-to-cover snapping system, modernizing the stealth mechanics. A new “last known position” mechanic was also added, represented by a ghostly outline of Arno, allowing players to tactically bait and flank guards.
- Challenging Combat: The combat system abandoned the easy, chain-killing execution streaks of the Ezio and Kenway eras. Fencing in Unity is significantly more difficult, requiring strict timing for parries and dodges. Engaging more than three or four guards at once is highly dangerous, actively encouraging players to rely on stealth and smoke bombs.
- Seamless Co-Op: The competitive multiplayer of previous games was replaced with narrative-driven, cooperative multiplayer. Up to four players can seamlessly join a session, exploring Paris together and undertaking specific, highly complex “Brotherhood” heist and assassination missions.
- Deep Customization: Arno is highly customizable. Players can mix and match different hoods, coats, bracers, belts, and pants, all of which directly affect Arno’s stats (stealth, health, melee, and ranged damage).
Development and Legacy
Development of Unity began in late 2010. The development team’s primary ambition was to recreate late-18th-century Paris on a nearly 1:1 scale. The architectural detail was unprecedented; senior level artist Caroline Miousse spent two years meticulously modeling the Notre-Dame Cathedral block by block so players could explore its fully rendered interior and exterior. The new engine also allowed for massive, terrifying crowds, capable of rendering up to 30,000 independent NPCs on screen at once to simulate the chaotic riots of the Revolution.
Unfortunately, Unity is heavily remembered for its disastrous launch in November 2014. The game was plagued by severe technical issues, including massive framerate drops, game-breaking bugs, and infamous graphical glitches (such as characters’ faces failing to load, leaving only floating eyes and teeth). The backlash was so severe that Ubisoft issued a formal apology, offered the “Dead Kings” story DLC for free, and canceled the franchise’s Season Pass.
However, in the years following its release—after numerous massive patches fixed the majority of the technical issues—Unity underwent a massive critical reappraisal. Today, it has a passionate cult following within the fanbase. Many players argue that its incredibly fluid parkour system, challenging stealth, and breathtakingly detailed recreation of Paris have never been surpassed by any subsequent entry in the franchise. It stands as a flawed but wildly ambitious masterpiece of urban level design.
