Where to buy
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a 2025 action role-playing and stealth video game developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft. Serving as the fourteenth major installment in the franchise, Shadows finally fulfills one of the most long-standing fan requests by taking the series to the turbulent late Sengoku period of feudal Japan. The game represents a brilliant fusion of the franchise’s two dominant eras, blending the deep, expansive RPG mechanics of Odyssey and Valhalla with the highly refined, classic stealth systems of Mirage.
The narrative utilizes a dual-protagonist structure, featuring two characters whose destinies become intimately intertwined as they fight to forge a new era for Japan. Players control Naoe, a fictional, highly skilled kunoichi (female shinobi) from the Iga Province seeking revenge after the destruction of her clan, and Yasuke, a powerful, real-life historical African samurai who serves under the legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga. Following divergent paths that ultimately collide, the duo must work together to root out the corrupting influence of the Templar Order hiding in the shadows of the nation’s chaotic civil war.
Gameplay
Shadows heavily emphasizes the stark contrast between its two protagonists, allowing players to choose between Naoe and Yasuke before tackling most missions. Their distinct physical attributes and training completely alter how players approach the open world.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Dual Playstyles: Yasuke acts as a heavy brawler and tank. Heavily armored, he excels in direct combat, utilizing mechanics like a posture system, blocking, and heavy parries with weapons like the katana and kanabo. He can literally smash through destructible walls and doors. Naoe, on the other hand, is fragile but incredibly agile. She represents the classic Assassin archetype, specializing in evasion, stealth, and rapid takedowns using a kusarigama, kunai, and the Hidden Blade.
- Advanced Stealth and Shadows: Naoe’s stealth relies heavily on a dynamic lighting system. Players can extinguish lanterns, hide in deep shadows, and use a dedicated crawling/prone stance to remain completely undetected. She also utilizes a grappling hook to rapidly ascend to the rooftops and avoid ground patrols.
- Dynamic Seasons and Weather: The open world is highly reactive, featuring a full seasonal cycle (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) and dynamic weather systems that directly impact gameplay. For example, in winter, ponds freeze over (preventing underwater stealth) and icicles can fall and alert guards. In summer, tall grass provides ample hiding spots for Naoe, while rainstorms can mask the sound of Yasuke’s heavy footsteps.
- Target Investigation: Moving away from a cluttered map of objective markers, the game utilizes an investigative system where players must gather intel, eavesdrop, and deduce the locations and identities of their targets, making the hunt feel much more organic.
- Spy Network and Hideout: Players can customize their own base of operations and build a network of shinobi spies, sending them out on missions to gather resources and uncover critical intelligence on assassination targets.
Development and Legacy
Developed by Ubisoft Quebec (the primary studio behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Syndicate), Shadows was originally announced under the codename Assassin’s Creed Codename Red. The development team utilized an upgraded version of the Anvil engine to accommodate the highly dynamic lighting and complex seasonal shifts, making it one of the most visually advanced games in the publisher’s history.
Originally slated for a November 2024 release, Ubisoft made the unprecedented decision to delay the game to March 2025. This delay was intended to allow the team to further polish the experience, fine-tune the mechanics, and ensure it met the massive expectations surrounding the highly requested Japanese setting.
Upon its release in March 2025, Assassin’s Creed Shadows received generally favorable reviews from critics and players alike. Reviewers praised the brilliant juxtaposition of Naoe and Yasuke’s playstyles—noting that having a dedicated stealth character alongside a dedicated combat character solved many of the identity crises the franchise faced during its RPG era. The breathtaking recreation of feudal Japan, complete with its dynamic seasons, was highly celebrated. While some critics pointed out that the game still occasionally suffered from familiar open-world bloat, it was largely hailed as a triumphant and highly successful realization of a long-awaited historical fantasy.
