Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a 2018 action-adventure game developed primarily by Eidos-Montréal (in conjunction with Crystal Dynamics) and published by Square Enix. Serving as the grand finale to the modern “Survivor Trilogy,” the game represents the culmination of Lara Croft’s origin story, pushing her to her absolute physical and psychological limits as she finally embraces her destiny as the Tomb Raider.

The narrative picks up roughly a year after the events of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Lara and her loyal friend Jonah Maiava are aggressively tracking Trinity across the globe. In Cozumel, Mexico, Lara races Trinity’s high command to secure an ancient Mayan dagger. However, in her desperate obsession to beat Trinity, she ignores the warnings on the murals and takes the artifact, inadvertently triggering the Mayan apocalypse—a series of cataclysmic events starting with a massive, city-destroying tsunami. Racked with guilt, Lara tracks Trinity to the dense, unforgiving jungles of Peru. There, she discovers Paititi, a massive hidden city untouched by the modern world, and must stop Dr. Pedro Dominguez, the head of Trinity, from using a silver box to remake the world in his image.

Gameplay

While Shadow of the Tomb Raider retains the core mechanics of the previous two games, it significantly shifts the gameplay balance. Firefights are far less frequent, with the game placing a massive emphasis on environmental traversal, deep exploration, and psychological stealth.

Key gameplay mechanics and additions include:

  • “Become the Jungle” Stealth: Lara is now a terrifying, predator-like force in the jungle. She can cover herself in mud to camouflage against vines and tree trunks, rendering her practically invisible to enemies. She can also strike from the canopy, using her rope arrows to string up Trinity mercenaries from tree branches like a horror movie monster.
  • Expanded Swimming: Underwater traversal received a massive overhaul. Lara can now explore deep, sprawling underwater caverns. Because she has a limited breath capacity, players must desperately dart between trapped air pockets while hiding in kelp to avoid hostile wildlife like piranha swarms and moray eels.
  • The Largest Hub World: The hidden city of Paititi is the largest, most densely populated hub area in the franchise’s history. Lara can freely explore the city, barter with merchants using gold and jade, learn about the culture, and pick up dedicated side-quests from the local inhabitants.
  • Deadlier Tombs: The Challenge Tombs in Shadow are significantly darker, larger, and more heavily trapped than those in Rise. They lean heavily into gruesome, terrifying Mesoamerican aesthetics, requiring players to navigate massive, bloody sacrificial pits and ancient, grinding machinery.
  • Independent Difficulty Toggles: A highly praised addition to the game was its granular difficulty settings. Players can independently adjust the difficulty for Combat, Puzzles, and Traversal. For example, turning up the Puzzle difficulty removes Lara’s vocal hints and turns off her “Survival Instincts” glow, while turning up Traversal difficulty completely removes the white paint that marks climbable ledges, forcing players to rely entirely on environmental observation.

Development and Legacy

For the final installment of the trilogy, development duties shifted from Crystal Dynamics (who were busy beginning work on Marvel’s Avengers) to Eidos-Montréal (the studio behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution), though Crystal Dynamics provided developmental support. The team’s goal was to show Lara at her most competent, but also her most dangerous and flawed, exploring the darker side of her obsessive personality.

Upon its release in September 2018, Shadow of the Tomb Raider received positive reviews, though the reception was slightly more mixed compared to Rise. Critics and fans absolutely loved the tomb design, the breathtaking jungle environments, and the return to puzzle-solving and exploration. However, some players felt that the pacing was occasionally bogged down by the slow-moving hub sections in Paititi, and noted that the heavily reduced combat encounters meant players rarely got to fully utilize the massive arsenal of weapons and skills they unlocked.

Camilla Luddington returned for her third and final performance as Lara Croft, delivering a highly emotional conclusion to the character’s developmental arc. In November 2019, Square Enix released the Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, which bundled the base game with all seven post-launch DLC Challenge Tombs, additional weapons, and outfits.

With the conclusion of this game, the “Survivor” era came to a close. Developer Crystal Dynamics has since confirmed that the next mainline Tomb Raider game (currently in development on Unreal Engine 5) will finally unify the timelines, bridging the gap between this hardened survivor and the classic, confident, twin-pistol-wielding adventurer of the 1990s.

Key Features:

  • Jungle Predator — Utilize mud camouflage and terrifying vertical takedowns to instill fear in heavily armed Trinity soldiers.
  • Deep-Water Exploration — Navigate beautiful, terrifying, and claustrophobic underwater caverns while managing Lara’s oxygen and avoiding aquatic predators.
  • Granular Difficulty — Customize your experience perfectly by independently scaling the difficulty of combat, environmental platforming, and puzzle-solving.
  • The Hidden City — Explore Paititi, a massive, living hub world filled with indigenous culture, merchants, and narrative-driven side missions.
  • The Tomb Raider — Experience the dark, cinematic climax of the Survivor Trilogy, officially forging Lara Croft into the legendary hero she is meant to be.
