Tomb Raider: Catalyst
PC,
PS5,
Xbox Series X/S
Tomb Raider: Catalyst is an upcoming action-adventure game currently in development by Crystal Dynamics and published by Amazon Games. Scheduled for release in 2027, it serves as the highly anticipated fourteenth mainline entry in the franchise and represents a massive turning point for the series: it is the game designed to officially “unify the timelines.”
For years, the Tomb Raider franchise was split between the classic, confident Lara Croft of the 1990s/2000s and the gritty, vulnerable origin story of the “Survivor Trilogy” (2013–2018). Catalyst bridges that gap. Acting as a chronological sequel to 2008’s Tomb Raider: Underworld, the game treats the Survivor games as Lara’s definitive origin, while embracing the sassy, experienced, dual-pistol-wielding adventurer she eventually became.
The story is set in Northern India, years after the events of Underworld. Following a massive, mythical cataclysm that rips open the earth and exposes ancient, untouched ruins, Lara Croft must race into the newly formed chasm. She is forced to compete against rival treasure hunters and navigate a web of uneasy alliances to secure the site’s ancient power before it triggers a global catastrophe.
Gameplay
Built from the ground up on Unreal Engine 5, Catalyst is poised to be a massive evolutionary leap for the franchise, pushing far past the hub-based design of the Survivor era into a fully realized open-world format.
While exact mechanical details are still closely guarded ahead of its 2027 release, confirmed gameplay elements include:
- The Largest Tomb Raider Yet: Crystal Dynamics has stated that Catalyst features the largest environment ever created for the franchise. The Northern India setting acts as a massive, highly vertical playground spanning dense jungles, vertigo-inducing mountain peaks, and infinite deserts.
- A Master Adventurer: Players take control of Lara at the absolute peak of her career. The gameplay will reflect her confidence, moving away from the desperate, scrambling survival mechanics of the 2013 reboot toward precise, athletic traversal, sophisticated puzzle-solving, and the triumphant return of her iconic dual pistols.
- Dynamic Environments: The cataclysmic premise suggests that the environment itself will be highly volatile and unpredictable, requiring players to utilize Lara’s wits and custom-built gear to survive shifting terrain and awakened mythological forces.
Development and Legacy
Following Crystal Dynamics’ acquisition by the Embracer Group and their subsequent publishing partnership with Amazon Games in late 2022, the studio quietly began work on the next generation of Tomb Raider.
The game was finally unveiled to the world with a spectacular cinematic trailer at The Game Awards in December 2025. The announcement was a massive double-feature that shocked the gaming community: Crystal Dynamics announced Catalyst for 2027, while simultaneously revealing Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis—a full, ground-up remake of the 1996 original game co-developed with Flying Wild Hog—slated for 2026 to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
A major highlight of the reveal was the casting of British actress Alix Wilton Regan as the new voice and performance capture for Lara Croft (taking over the mantle from Camilla Luddington). Regan was specifically chosen for her ability to deliver the wit, charm, and underlying arrogance that defined the classic PS1-era Lara, while retaining the emotional depth established in the modern reboots.
