World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade
Expansion of World of Warcraft
PC
Blizzard Entertainment

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (frequently abbreviated as TBC) is the monumental 2007 expansion pack for the MMORPG World of Warcraft, developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. As the very first expansion to the pop-culture juggernaut, The Burning Crusade had the impossible task of following up the most successful MMO launch in history. It succeeded flawlessly, fundamentally altering the game’s mechanics, introducing vital quality-of-life features, and cementing WoW as an unstoppable global phenomenon.
The narrative thrusts players through the newly reopened Dark Portal into Outland—the shattered, floating cosmic remains of the Orc homeworld of Draenor (the same world explored in 1996’s Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal). The demonic Burning Legion is amassing a new invasion force, but the ruined world is also contested by Illidan Stormrage, the rogue Night Elf demon hunter who has crowned himself the Lord of Outland. Accompanied by his lieutenants, Lady Vashj and Kael’thas Sunstrider, Illidan challenges the heroes of Azeroth with the legendary, unforgettable marketing tagline: “You are not prepared!”
Gameplay
The Burning Crusade raised the level cap from 60 to 70 and completely revolutionized how endgame content was structured, moving away from the massive, chaotic, and difficult-to-organize systems of “Vanilla” WoW.
Key gameplay mechanics and additions include:
- New Races and Faction Crossover: The expansion introduced two completely new playable races that shattered the previous faction exclusivity. The Alliance received the Draenei (allowing Alliance players to finally play the Shaman class), while the Horde received the Blood Elves (allowing Horde players to finally play the Paladin class).
- Flying Mounts: Arguably the most game-changing mechanical addition in WoW history. Upon reaching level 70, players could purchase flying mounts (like Gryphons, Wyverns, or the Netherwing Drakes), allowing them to completely bypass ground-based terrain and freely soar through the skies of Outland.
- Raid Restructuring: In original WoW, endgame raids required an agonizing 40 players to complete. TBC drastically lowered this cap, shifting to tightly tuned 10-player raids (like Karazhan) and 25-player raids (like the Black Temple and Sunwell Plateau). This made raiding significantly more accessible and focused heavily on individual mechanical accountability.
- The Birth of Arena PvP: The expansion introduced structured, highly competitive 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 Arena deathmatches. This completely replaced the massive, endless battleground grinds of the original game as the primary way to earn the best PvP gear, inadvertently birthing WoW‘s first true esports scene.
- Heroic Dungeons: TBC introduced the concept of difficulty toggles. Upon reaching maximum level and earning enough “reputation” with specific factions, players could unlock “Heroic” versions of the 5-player leveling dungeons, featuring tougher enemies, new mechanics, and epic-quality loot.
Development and Legacy
Released in January 2007, the launch of The Burning Crusade was a massive cultural event. Thousands of GameStop and Best Buy stores held legendary midnight release parties, with lines wrapping around city blocks. It sold nearly 2.4 million copies in its first 24 hours, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time at that point.
The expansion is widely considered by veteran players to be part of WoW‘s “Golden Age.” It struck a perfect balance between the hardcore, time-consuming grind of the original game and the streamlined accessibility of modern MMOs. The raid progression system—where players had to complete earlier raid tiers to earn “attunement” keys to enter later raids—created a deeply rewarding sense of prestige that many hardcore fans argue has never been replicated.
Honoring its immortal legacy, Blizzard released World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade Classic in June 2021. This allowed players to essentially step into a time machine and replay the expansion exactly as it existed in 2007 on modern servers. While the Classic progression servers have since moved forward into later expansions, the impact of The Burning Crusade on the foundational DNA of the MMO genre is permanent.
