The Last Oricru

The Last Oricru is a 2022 action RPG developed by Czech studio GoldKnights and published by Prime Matter, released October 13, 2022 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It launched to aggregate scores in the low-to-mid 50s — among the year’s weakest-reviewed Soulslikes — and then did something unusual for the genre: it came back. The free Final Cut overhaul, released in 2023, rebuilt combat, balance, and performance comprehensively enough that the updated version replaced the original on storefronts, subtitle and all.

Its actual distinguishing ideas deserved better than the launch: a fully voiced, wisecracking protagonist, story-branching faction betrayals with real consequences, and — rarest of all in this genre — couch co-op.

Silver, an immortal wisecracker woken from stasis on the planet Wardenia, lands in the middle of a war between medieval-tiered factions on a world where crashed-starship technology and swords coexist. The hook is consequence: siding with, betraying, and re-betraying factions visibly reroutes the story, and the resurrection gimmick is diegetic — everyone knows Silver can’t die, and the writing leans on it. Reviewers consistently credited the ambition of the branching structure and the novelty of a chatty protagonist in a genre of mutes, even when the jokes divided them.

Launch vs Final Cut

The 2022 release was undone by fundamentals — stiff, poorly balanced combat, technical problems, and difficulty spikes co-op made worse rather than better. The Final Cut rebuilt combat feel, rebalanced the campaign, and stabilized performance for free; the community verdict since, visible in the exact “finally worth a play?” threads that rank for the game, is a fair-price qualified yes — a 6-out-of-10 with unusual ideas rather than a broken game. It never got the full reputational turnaround of Lords of the Fallen‘s 2.0, but it’s the same species of comeback at smaller scale.
