Warcraft III: Reforged is a 2020 real-time strategy (RTS) game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Intended to be a glorious, modern celebration of the legendary 2002 classic Reign of Chaos and its 2003 expansion The Frozen Throne, the game instead became one of the most highly anticipated, fiercely debated, and initially disastrous releases in PC gaming history.
The premise was simple and highly requested: unite the original game and its expansion under a single, modern client, completely overhaul the 3D models and environments to meet modern standards, and integrate the vibrant custom game community into the modern Battle.net ecosystem.
Gameplay
Underneath the hood, Reforged runs on the exact same underlying gameplay logic as the original 2002 release. This means the flawless RTS/RPG hybrid mechanics—including hero leveling, the low-upkeep gold tax, neutral creeping, and the four asymmetrical factions (Humans, Orcs, Undead, Night Elves)—remain completely intact.
Key gameplay mechanics and features of the remaster include:
- The Graphics Toggle: Players can seamlessly swap between the newly forged, highly detailed HD graphics and the classic, chunky 2002 3D models.
- Unified Client: The campaigns of both Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne are merged into one continuous, 60-plus mission storyline.
- Updated Lore Integration: A handful of specific campaign missions (most notably the Fall of Silvermoon and the Culling of Stratholme) were slightly redesigned to match the physical city layouts established in World of Warcraft, making the lore more cohesive.
- The World Editor: The legendary map-making tool was updated with modern scripting capabilities, allowing the community to continue creating the iconic Tower Defenses, RPGs, and custom scenarios the game is famous for.
Development and Legacy (The Fall and Rise)
When Reforged was first announced at BlizzCon 2018, it blew fans away. Blizzard showcased a fully remade “Culling of Stratholme” mission featuring dynamic, modern camera angles, fully lip-synced in-engine cutscenes, and a completely redesigned UI.
However, upon its release in January 2020, the game faced an unprecedented wave of backlash, earning the mocking nickname “Warcraft III: Refunded.” The launch was catastrophic for several key reasons:
- Broken Promises: The cinematic cutscenes and dynamic camera angles shown at BlizzCon 2018 were entirely scrapped to save development time.
- Missing Features: The game launched without basic competitive features that existed in 2002, such as an automated ladder, player profiles, clans, and custom campaigns.
- The Classic Client Death: In a highly controversial move, Blizzard forced all players who owned the original 2002 game to download the new 30GB Reforged client, effectively overwriting and deleting the beloved classic client and temporarily stripping classic players of those missing features.
- The EULA Change: Stung by the fact that they lost the rights to the MOBA genre when DotA was made in their original engine, Blizzard aggressively updated the Custom Game EULA, legally claiming 100% ownership over any custom map created in Reforged.
For years, the game sat in a state of limbo, receiving slow patches to slowly re-add the missing ladder and clan features.
The 2.0 Redemption: In a massive turnaround, Blizzard utilized the franchise’s 30th Anniversary in November 2024 to finally make things right. Alongside the surprise releases of Warcraft I and II Remastered, Blizzard dropped the massive Warcraft III: Reforged Patch 2.0. This overhaul was widely celebrated by the community. It completely revamped the game’s lighting and environment textures (fixing the “washed out” look of the 2020 launch), introduced a totally overhauled, highly customizable UI, upscaled all classic assets to HD, and introduced a brilliant new feature allowing players to mix-and-match assets (e.g., using HD Reforged unit models but Classic environment textures).
Thanks to the 2.0 update, Reforged finally shed its disastrous reputation, standing today as the definitive, polished way to experience the tragedy of Arthas Menethil.
