Blizzard Caps Dungeon XP in WoW: Forever to Keep World Central
Blizzard has announced a modest increase to dungeon XP in World of Warcraft: Forever, but the studio is drawing a hard line against letting dungeon farming become the dominant way players reach level 60, citing the open world of Azeroth as central to the game’s design philosophy.
What Blizzard Is Changing and Why
In a podcast released earlier this week, Blizzard developers outlined their thinking on dungeon experience rates in WoW: Forever. According to PC Gamer, the XP players earn from killing monsters inside dungeons will go up slightly compared to current rates, but it will still fall short of what the original WoW offered during its Classic era. The goal is to make dungeon runs feel more rewarding without tipping the scale away from outdoor questing.
Josh “Aggrend” Greenfield from Blizzard addressed the community directly on X, stating: “XP gain is not going to be what it was in WoW Classic, but it should feel significantly better now. We understand that some of you want to dungeon cleave to 60, but this is another one of those things that has to pass muster with our core pillars. That playstyle being the optimal way to level does not pass that muster and we need to hold firm on these balance adjustments.”
The Design Philosophy Behind the Decision
Blizzard’s reasoning ties back to a core vision for WoW: Forever: the world of Azeroth itself should function as the “main character” of the leveling experience. If dungeon XP rates outpaced questing, large portions of the player base would skip open-world content entirely, undermining that vision. The studio wants tanks and healers to have a reason to queue for dungeons during the leveling process, but not to the point where skipping outdoor content becomes the obvious meta choice.
As PC Gamer notes, this is a moment where the often blurry identity of WoW: Forever is becoming clearer. The game is not trying to recreate every mechanic from the original MMO verbatim; it is making deliberate choices about what to bring forward and what to leave behind. WoW Classic remains available for players who want the older experience.
What Could Come Next for Dungeon Incentives
The conversation around dungeons does raise questions about how Blizzard plans to keep group content relevant throughout the leveling journey without letting it eclipse outdoor play. One possibility involves limited-time events, a format Blizzard already experimented with during Season of Discovery, a precursor to WoW: Forever. That mode introduced items that modified ability behavior and offered bonuses tied to specific professions. Blizzard carried some of those Season of Discovery items into WoW: Forever, leaving the door open for similar additions down the line.
How far Blizzard will ultimately push WoW: Forever away from the classic formula remains an open question, especially as the game will need to sustain player interest without the expansion release cycle that traditionally refreshed the MMO’s audience and content pool.
