Command & Conquer – The Covert Operations is the 1996 expansion pack for the genre-defining 1995 real-time strategy classic, Command & Conquer (retroactively known as Tiberian Dawn). Developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Interactive, this add-on was created specifically to satiate a rapidly growing fanbase that was hungry for more content after conquering the original game’s campaigns.

Unlike the sprawling, narrative-heavy expansions the franchise would become famous for later on (like Firestorm or Kane’s Wrath), The Covert Operations was fundamentally a “mission disk.” It did not introduce any new units, structures, or live-action cutscenes. Instead, it delivered an arsenal of brutally unforgiving, standalone tactical challenges designed exclusively for hardcore veterans.

Gameplay and Structure

The Covert Operations completely threw out the linear campaign structure. When booting up the expansion, players were simply presented with a menu of 15 brand-new missions (7 for the Global Defense Initiative, and 8 for the Brotherhood of Nod).

Key gameplay characteristics include:

  • Standalone Scenarios: Because there was no overarching narrative, you could play the missions in any order. Each mission acted as an isolated, high-stakes tactical scenario.
  • Punishing Difficulty: Westwood operated under the assumption that if you were buying this expansion, you had already mastered the base game. The training wheels were completely gone. The AI was significantly more aggressive, starting resources were incredibly scarce, and players frequently found themselves heavily outnumbered from the very first second of a mission.
  • New Multiplayer Maps: Alongside the single-player content, the expansion injected 10 brand-new multiplayer maps into the game, keeping the competitive dial-up and LAN scenes thriving.
  • New Klepacki Tracks: While there were no new cutscenes, legendary composer Frank Klepacki composed seven brand-new, high-energy industrial electronic tracks for the expansion, which would go down as some of the best in the 90s C&C library.

The Secret “Funpark” Campaign

The absolute most famous aspect of The Covert Operations wasn’t printed on the back of the box. Westwood hid a massive, wildly entertaining Easter egg inside the expansion’s code, heavily inspired by the massive pop-culture phenomenon of Jurassic Park.

By launching the game with a specific command-line parameter (adding the word funpark to the executable shortcut), players unlocked a secret, five-mission mini-campaign. A bizarre temporal anomaly causes massive, hyper-aggressive Dinosaurs to spawn across the Tiberium-infested battlefields. Players had to use modern tanks and infantry to fight off swarms of Velociraptors, Triceratops, Stegosauruses, and devastating, base-crushing Tyrannosaurus Rexes. (If you beat the campaign, you even unlocked a final mission where you got to play as the dinosaurs and eat the human forces).

Development and Legacy

Released in 1996, The Covert Operations was exactly what the mid-90s PC gaming market wanted: more levels to play. While modern gamers might find the lack of new units or story progression slightly barebones for an expansion pack, it was a massive commercial success at the time and cemented Westwood’s reputation for supporting their titles post-launch.

Today, in 2026, playing The Covert Operations is an absolute joy, thanks entirely to the phenomenal Command & Conquer Remastered Collection. Released in 2020 by EA and Petroglyph Games (a studio founded by original Westwood developers), this masterpiece of a remaster completely redrew the 1995 2D graphics into glorious 4K resolution. The remaster natively includes every single Covert Operations mission, completely remastered audio, and makes the secret Dinosaur campaign easily accessible right from the main menu without needing any secret codes.

Key Features:

  • Veteran Challenges — Test your RTS skills across 15 brutally difficult, standalone missions that require absolute mastery of the 1995 game’s mechanics.
  • Choose Your Allegiance — Tackle 7 new scenarios for the GDI and 8 new operations for the Brotherhood of Nod, playable in any order.
  • Expanded Soundtrack — Battle to the beat of seven brand-new, iconic industrial tracks composed by the legendary Frank Klepacki.
  • The Dinosaur Secret — Unlock the legendary “Funpark” campaign and pit modern military tanks against swarms of prehistoric dinosaurs.
  • Flawlessly Remastered — Play the expansion today in stunning 4K resolution via the acclaimed 2020 Command & Conquer Remastered Collection.

Release Platforms:

  • MS-DOS / Windows 95 — April 30, 1996 (Original Release)
  • Microsoft Windows (PC) — June 5, 2020 (Available on Steam and the EA App strictly as part of the fully integrated Command & Conquer Remastered Collection).
