Where to buy
Command & Conquer: Yuri’s Revenge is the legendary 2001 expansion pack for Red Alert 2, developed by Westwood Pacific and published by Electronic Arts. If Red Alert 2 pushed the franchise into the realm of glorious, B-movie camp, Yuri’s Revenge completely shattered the ceiling. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest, most feature-rich expansion packs in PC gaming history, introducing a completely new, wildly unbalanced, and incredibly fun third faction to the global conflict.
The narrative canonically follows the Allied victory in Red Alert 2. With the Soviet Union defeated, the Allies believe the world is safe. However, Alexander Romanov’s former psychic advisor, Yuri (played with absolute, scene-chewing perfection by Udo Kier), emerges from the shadows. He reveals a massive, secret army and activates a global network of Psychic Dominators—massive devices designed to permanently mind-control the entire human race. Desperate, the Allies use Albert Einstein’s experimental time machine in San Francisco to travel back in time, aiming to destroy Yuri’s network while it is still under construction.
Gameplay
Yuri’s Revenge didn’t just add a few new units; it completely upended the meta of the base game. It introduced new campaigns for both the Allies and the Soviets (though, famously, no campaign for Yuri himself), and completely overhauled multiplayer tactics.
Key gameplay mechanics and additions include:
- The Tech Buildings: The expansion massively expanded the importance of capturing neutral civilian structures on the map. Capturing a Machine Shop granted automatic self-healing to all your vehicles, a Hospital healed your infantry, and a Secret Lab granted you access to a completely random technology from a rival faction (like giving the Soviets access to French Grand Cannons).
- Allied Upgrades: To counter Yuri’s mind control, the Allies received the Robot Tank (a hovering drone completely immune to psychic attacks) and the massive Battle Fortress (a heavy transport that infantry could fire out of, capable of crushing enemy tanks beneath its treads). They also gained the Guardian GI, heavily armored infantry effective against tanks and aircraft.
- Soviet Upgrades: The Soviets received Boris, a legendary hero unit wielding an AKM who could paint targets with a laser to summon devastating MiG airstrikes. They also gained the Siege Chopper (a flying artillery platform that deploys into a stationary cannon) and the Battle Bunker to fortify their base defenses.
The New Faction: Yuri’s Army
Yuri’s faction is an absolute masterclass in weird, sinister, and delightfully frustrating game design. They completely abandon traditional military doctrine in favor of genetics, psychic warfare, and pure sadism:
- The Economy: Instead of standard Ore Miners, Yuri uses the Slave Miner—a massive, mobile factory that drives to an ore patch and unleashes mind-controlled slaves with shovels to physically dig up the ore. If the Miner is destroyed, the slaves are freed and will attack Yuri’s forces.
- Psychic and Genetic Warfare: Yuri’s arsenal includes the Magnetron (a vehicle that magnetically levitates enemy tanks into the air and drops them into the ocean or onto cliffs), the Mastermind (a massive brain on tank treads that can mind-control multiple units at once), and Brutes (Hulk-like genetic mutants created by the Genetic Mutator super-weapon, which instantly transforms enemy infantry into friendly monsters).
- The Grinder: Because Yuri constantly steals enemy units via mind control, he needed a way to dispose of them. The Grinder is a structure that literally grinds up mind-controlled enemy tanks and infantry, converting them back into cold, hard cash for your economy.
- The Boomer Submarine: Yuri’s naval presence is anchored by this terrifying, dual-purpose submarine. It fires torpedoes at ships, but can also surface to launch devastating cruise missiles at land bases.
Development and Legacy
Released in October 2001, just a year after the base game, Yuri’s Revenge was universally praised for its wildly creative unit design and its continuation of the beloved FMV cutscenes. It completely changed the landscape of the game’s multiplayer. Yuri’s faction was notoriously difficult to balance—in the hands of a skilled player, his ability to turn an opponent’s army against itself was devastating.
The lack of a dedicated single-player campaign for Yuri was the only major criticism at launch, but the community took it upon themselves to fix this over the subsequent decades.
Today in 2026, Yuri’s Revenge is arguably the most actively played classic C&C game in existence. The community-run CnCNet continues to host thousands of daily players for competitive multiplayer. Furthermore, the expansion serves as the foundational engine for Mental Omega, a legendary, massive fan-made expansion mod that adds thousands of new units, a fourth faction, and a sprawling 100+ mission campaign that formally tells Yuri’s side of the story. With EA’s 2024 release of the Ultimate Collection on Steam, Yuri’s Revenge remains easily accessible and permanently etched into RTS history.
