Command & Conquer Remastered Collection
PC
Electronic Arts
Command & Conquer Remastered Collection is a 2020 compilation and top-to-bottom remaster of the two foundational pillars of the RTS genre: the original 1995 Command & Conquer (Tiberian Dawn) and the 1996 masterpiece Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Published by Electronic Arts, the game was co-developed by Lemon Sky Studios and, crucially, Petroglyph Games—a studio founded by the original Westwood Studios developers who created the franchise in the 90s.
After a decade of missteps and mobile spin-offs that alienated the hardcore fanbase, EA took a wildly different approach for this project. They partnered directly with the most prominent members of the C&C community, formed a “Community Council” to guide development, and delivered what is widely considered the absolute gold standard for how to remaster a classic PC game.
Gameplay and Modernizations
The core philosophy of the Remastered Collection was preservation. Petroglyph deliberately left the original 90s source code running beneath the hood, meaning the AI, the unit pathfinding, and the combat timings play exactly as they did in 1995 and 1996. All the modernizations were applied over the top as a pristine, high-definition shell.
Key modernizations and quality-of-life upgrades include:
- Real-Time Graphics Toggling: The absolute best feature in the game. While playing the single-player campaigns, you can press the Spacebar at any time to seamlessly and instantly toggle between the original 320×200 pixel art and the beautifully redrawn 4K 2D assets created by Lemon Sky Studios. You can literally watch the history of PC graphics shift back and forth in real-time.
- Modernized UI and Controls: The classic right-hand sidebar was heavily redesigned to eliminate scrolling. The game introduced modern RTS staples that were absent in the 90s, such as custom hotkeys, unit queuing, a zoomable camera, and the ability to double-click to select all units of the same type.
- Revamped Multiplayer: The incredibly archaic dial-up and LAN architecture was stripped out and replaced with a fully modern backend. The collection features dedicated servers, custom lobbies, Elo-based matchmaking, leaderboards, and replays.
- Upscaled FMVs: The legendary, campy live-action cutscenes featuring Joseph D. Kucan (Kane) and the rest of the cast were upscaled using AI algorithms. While the source tapes had unfortunately been lost to time, the community helped provide the highest-quality CD-ROM rips available to ensure the video quality was as clean as possible.
The Complete Package
The collection didn’t just include the two base games; it gathered absolutely every piece of content created for that era of the franchise into a single launcher:
- The Expansions: It natively includes all three expansion packs—The Covert Operations (Tiberian Dawn), and Counterstrike and The Aftermath (Red Alert).
- Console Exclusives: For the first time ever, PC players gained official access to the secret Dinosaur and Giant Ant campaigns directly from the main menu. Furthermore, the exclusive FMV cutscenes from the PS1’s Retaliation and the specialized 3D missions from the Nintendo 64 port of Command & Conquer were fully integrated.
- The Ultimate Jukebox: Legendary composer Frank Klepacki returned to direct the audio. The game features over seven hours of music, including the original MIDI tracks, fully remastered versions, and unreleased behind-the-scenes tracks. Furthermore, Klepacki teamed up with the fan-band The Tiberian Sons to record massive, high-energy studio covers of the franchise’s most iconic songs.
Development and Legacy
Released in June 2020, the Remastered Collection was an overwhelming critical and commercial triumph. It proved that the classic RTS genre still possessed a massive, hungry audience and served as a profound apology to long-time fans of the franchise.
In an unprecedented move for a massive publisher like Electronic Arts, they released the TiberianDawn.dll and RedAlert.dll source code files directly to the public under the GPL open-source license alongside the game’s launch. This officially sanctioned the modding community, leading to native Steam Workshop support and allowing fans to tweak unit behaviors, create custom campaigns, and keep the game alive indefinitely.
Today, in 2026, the Remastered Collection stands not just as a fantastic nostalgia trip, but as an essential piece of interactive gaming history, flawlessly preserving the dawn of the RTS genre for modern hardware.
