Tim Curry, the English actor whose theatrical intensity made him one of the most recognizable performers across stage, film, television, and video games, has died at the age of 80. According to PC Gamer, Curry passed away late Tuesday night at his home in Los Angeles, with the death first reported by TMZ.

A Career Built on Bold Choices

Curry built his reputation on roles that demanded commitment to excess. He first seized public attention as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 film adaptation of The Rocky Horror Show, a performance that turned the movie into a midnight cult phenomenon that endures to this day. From there he stacked one memorable role onto another: Darkness in Legend, Wadsworth in Clue, Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries It, and a scene-stealing pirate foil to Kermit the Frog in Muppet Treasure Island. He also appeared in The Hunt for Red October, Home Alone 2, and the Broadway production of Spamalot. A Genuine Force in Video Games

Curry took his talents to interactive entertainment with the same enthusiasm he brought to every other medium. He played the lead in Sierra’s Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers and returned for the third entry in that point-and-click series. He later contributed voice work to both Brütal Legend and Dragon Age: Origins. As GameSpot highlighted, those performances left a lasting mark on players who encountered them. In a 1993 behind-the-scenes feature included with the original Gabriel Knight CD, Curry described contributing to games as “very exciting” because he welcomed “any new way to infiltrate myself into your minds.”

His crowning video game moment arrived as Premier Anatoly Cherdenko in Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3. The live-action FMV performance became legendary, particularly one line delivery involving the word “space” that PC Gamer described as possibly the single most triumphant line read in the history of acting. It is a difficult claim to argue with.

Final Years and Legacy

Curry suffered a major stroke in 2012 that required brain surgery and left him partially paralyzed, affecting his short-term memory and reducing his public appearances in subsequent years. He was nonetheless welcomed by an adoring crowd at a 50th anniversary screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in October 2025, the same month he published his memoir, Vagabond, which chronicled his life and career. In one of his final interviews, speaking with CBS News in 2025, Curry said he was not afraid of death. “I try to avoid it, as I think we all do,” he said. “But I suspect that in the end, I will welcome it.” He was 80 years old.
