Metro: Last Light Redux is a 2014 post-apocalyptic first-person shooter and survival horror game developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. It is the definitive, remastered version of the 2013 hit Metro: Last Light. Arriving just over a year after the original game’s launch, the Redux edition was created primarily to bring the visually demanding shooter to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One console generation, while also heavily updating the PC version. It combines the acclaimed base campaign with all previously released downloadable content (DLC) into one seamless, graphically enhanced package.

The story directly follows the events of the first game. Assuming the “bad ending” of Metro 2033 is canon, Artyom is now a Ranger occupying the massive pre-war military bunker, D6. Riddled with guilt over initiating a devastating missile strike against the psychic mutant race known as the Dark Ones, Artyom discovers that a single infant Dark One survived. He is sent to the irradiated surface of Moscow to find it, but the mission goes awry. Soon, Artyom is caught in a massive, brewing civil war as the fascist Fourth Reich and the communist Red Line mobilize their armies to conquer D6. He must navigate the treacherous politics of the metro, protect the infant Dark One, and prevent humanity’s total annihilation.

Gameplay

Metro: Last Light Redux maintains the core blend of stealth, resource management, and visceral first-person shooting. While the graphical leap wasn’t as drastically transformative as it was for Metro 2033 Redux (since the original Last Light was already highly advanced), the gameplay mechanics were refined and standardized across both titles to create a cohesive franchise experience.

Key gameplay mechanics include:

  • Two Distinct Playstyles: To cater to different types of players, the Redux version introduces two overarching modes. “Spartan” mode reflects the pacing of the original Last Light, offering a more action-oriented experience with plentiful ammunition, faster weapon reloads, and more agile movement. “Survival” mode artificially slows the game down, severely limiting resources and increasing enemy lethality to mimic the grueling survival horror feel of the original Metro 2033.
  • Integrated Arsenal and DLC: All weapons previously locked behind DLC paywalls (such as the Abzats heavy shotgun or the silent Hellbreath) are seamlessly integrated into the base campaign’s loot tables and vendor kiosks. Additionally, all single-player DLC missions (such as the Faction, Developer, and Chronicles packs) are included in the game menu.
  • Refined Stealth System: The stealth mechanics remain incredibly fluid. Players can shoot out lights, unscrew lightbulbs, and use the darkness to sneak past human enemies, executing silent knockouts or lethal takedowns. Enemy AI was tweaked to be slightly more responsive and realistic when discovering bodies or hearing suppressed gunfire.
  • Diegetic UI and Resource Management: The franchise’s signature immersion is fully intact. Players must manually wipe blood and radioactive mud off their gas mask, swap out degradable air filters, and use a hand-crank charger to keep their flashlight and night-vision goggles operational.

Development and Legacy

Developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver, Metro: Last Light Redux was released in August 2014 as both a standalone digital purchase and physically bundled with its predecessor in the Metro Redux compilation.

The primary motivation for the Redux version was the launch of the eighth generation of video game consoles. The developers wanted to ensure console players could experience the game at a smooth 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution—a feat that was impossible on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 hardware. On PC, the game benefited from 4K texture support, improved global illumination, and more detailed character models.

The remaster was highly praised by critics and fans alike. While owners of the original PC version felt the graphical upgrades were subtle, the inclusion of all DLC, the heavily requested “Survival” mode, and the incredibly smooth performance made it the undisputed definitive edition of the game. It perfectly bridged the gap between Artyom’s origins and the eventual 2019 sequel, Metro Exodus.

Key Features:

  • Next-Gen Performance — Experience the haunting Moscow metro with updated lighting, higher-resolution textures, and a locked 60fps framerate on consoles.
  • The Complete Package — Includes the massive base campaign and over 10 hours of bonus content from all previously released season pass DLCs.
  • Choose Your Pace — Play the campaign as a slow, methodical survival horror experience (“Survival” mode) or as a heavily armed, fast-paced action shooter (“Spartan” mode).
  • Ranger Mode Included — The ultimate challenge mode is included by default, stripping away the HUD and increasing weapon damage for a brutally realistic experience.
  • Unmatched Immersion — A deeply atmospheric world where the economy runs on military-grade bullets and your survival depends on a ticking watch and a clean gas mask.
