Where to buy
Metro 2033 Redux is a 2014 post-apocalyptic first-person shooter and survival horror game developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. It is the definitive, fully remastered version of the original 2010 cult classic Metro 2033. Rebuilt from the ground up using the latest, most advanced iteration of the proprietary 4A Engine (which powered its sequel, Metro: Last Light), the Redux version dramatically overhauls the original game’s visual fidelity, performance, and core gameplay mechanics.
The narrative remains identical to the 2010 release, following the journey of Artyom as he travels through the irradiated, mutant-infested tunnels of the Moscow metro system to save his home station from the mysterious psychic threat known as the Dark Ones. However, the way players experience this journey was significantly modernized, bringing it in line with the standards set by its highly acclaimed sequel.
Gameplay
Metro 2033 Redux retains the atmospheric, claustrophobic survival horror elements of the original but integrates the vastly improved mechanical foundation of Metro: Last Light. The clunky combat and rigid stealth systems of the 2010 release were entirely replaced, resulting in a much smoother and more responsive gameplay experience.
Key gameplay mechanics and improvements include:
- Two Distinct Playstyles: Recognizing that the franchise had a divided fanbase between survival horror purists and action-shooter fans, 4A Games introduced two overarching modes. “Survival” mode mimics the original Metro 2033 experience with scarce resources, slower reload times, and tougher enemies. “Spartan” mode makes the game play more like Last Light, turning Artyom into a more capable fighter with plentiful ammunition and faster animations.
- Overhauled Stealth and Combat: Redux introduces the ability to perform silent, non-lethal knockouts or lethal stealth takedowns, a feature completely missing from the original game. Enemy artificial intelligence was also completely rewritten to be fairer and more reactive.
- Mechanical Imports: Quality-of-life features from Last Light were ported over, such as weapon customization at trading kiosks, the ability to wipe blood and condensation off Artyom’s gas mask with the press of a button, and a vastly improved inventory interface.
- Ranger Mode: Included by default, this fan-favorite difficulty setting strips away the entire HUD (Heads-Up Display) and makes combat highly lethal for both the player and enemies, demanding complete reliance on the game’s diegetic audio and visual cues.
Development and Legacy
The development of Metro 2033 Redux occurred during a tumultuous period for 4A Games. Following the bankruptcy of the franchise’s original publisher, THQ, in 2013, the Metro intellectual property was acquired by Deep Silver. Concurrently, the developers in Kyiv were working amidst the outbreak of the Euromaidan protests and subsequent political crisis in Ukraine, eventually leading the studio to open a new headquarters in Malta.
Deep Silver and 4A Games saw the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as the perfect opportunity to bring the Metro franchise to a new console generation. Instead of a simple resolution bump, the team completely transported the 2010 game into the newer Last Light engine. This allowed for seamless, loading-screen-free transitions between many levels, advanced global illumination, dynamic weather, and newly modeled characters and mutant variants.
Released in August 2014 both as a standalone digital title and physically alongside Metro: Last Light Redux in the Metro Redux compilation, the game was a massive critical and commercial success. Reviewers praised it as one of the most substantial and worthwhile remasters in the industry, effectively erasing the technical frustrations of the original game while preserving its incredible atmosphere. It firmly established the definitive way to experience Artyom’s origin story.
