Metro Awakening
Metro Awakening is a 2024 virtual reality (VR) survival horror and first-person shooter game developed by Vertigo Studios Amsterdam and published by Vertigo Games in collaboration with Deep Silver. Serving as a prequel to the mainline Metro series and Metro 2033, the game was built exclusively for VR platforms. With a story penned by series creator and author Dmitry Glukhovsky, Awakening explores the origin story of one of the franchise’s most enigmatic and beloved characters, Khan.
Set in the year 2028, the narrative follows Dr. Serdar, a physician grappling with the harsh realities of the post-nuclear Moscow metro. When his wife, Yana, goes missing, Serdar must venture beyond the relative safety of his home station into the treacherous, irradiated depths of the underground. Along his harrowing journey, his sanity and beliefs are pushed to the absolute limit, eventually leading to his supernatural transformation into the mystical figure known as Khan.
Gameplay
Metro Awakening faithfully adapts the franchise’s signature blend of stealth, resource management, and claustrophobic survival horror into a highly interactive virtual reality environment. By mapping the series’ traditional diegetic mechanics to the player’s physical movements, the game significantly heightens the sense of immersion and tension.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Tactile Interactions: Players must physically perform actions that were previously simple button presses in the mainline games. This includes manually cranking a dynamo to charge the flashlight, physically wiping condensation or blood off the gas mask visor, and grabbing fresh air filters from a backpack.
- VR Weapon Handling: Firefights require realistic, multi-step reloading processes. Players must physically eject empty magazines, grab fresh ammo from their chest rig, insert the clip, and rack the slide under the pressure of incoming mutant or bandit attacks.
- Stealth and Survival: Ammo remains incredibly scarce. Players must utilize the shadows, physically lean around corners to scout enemy patrols, and execute silent takedowns to conserve resources. The light sensor on the player’s wrist returns, indicating when they are hidden from human enemies.
- Psychological Horror: Due to the immersive nature of VR and Serdar’s deteriorating mental state, the game leans heavily into psychological and supernatural horror, featuring hallucinations, ghost encounters, and atmospheric dread.
Development and Legacy
While the mainline Metro games were developed by the Ukraine-based 4A Games using their proprietary 4A Engine, Metro Awakening was handed to Vertigo Games—a studio renowned for its VR expertise with titles like Arizona Sunshine and After the Fall. To achieve the high visual fidelity expected of the Metro franchise while maintaining smooth VR performance, Vertigo built the game from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5.
Announced in early 2024 and released in November of the same year, the developers collaborated closely with author Dmitry Glukhovsky to ensure the game’s narrative fit seamlessly into the established lore. Metro Awakening was praised by critics and players for successfully translating the oppressive, detailed atmosphere of the Metro universe into virtual reality without sacrificing its mechanical depth. It won the “VR Game of the Year” at the 2024 Steam Awards, cementing its status as a premier narrative-driven VR experience.
