The Metro franchise has crossed 50 million copies sold worldwide, and 4A Games is marking the milestone with a free next-gen update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux, arriving October 22 on PC and October 29 on consoles, according to Eurogamer. The update lands 16 years after the original Metro 2033 first released.

What the Update Adds

The studio is clear that this is not a full remaster or remake. Instead, Eurogamer reports that 4A Games has preserved the original look and feel of Metro Redux while layering in 4K textures across all platforms, improved animations, higher-quality audio, richer environmental detail, and a collection of community-requested bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. Full patch notes will be held back until launch day.

Platform-Specific Features

On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, the update brings native platform support with a notable set of extras. PS5 Pro players get PSSR support, while Xbox Series X receives TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing. Both console families gain spatial audio, though Xbox extends that feature more broadly across its lineup. Console players can target native 4K at 60fps or upscaled 4K at 120fps on compatible displays, with upgraded lighting, shadows, and particle effects also included. DualSense Adaptive Triggers are supported on PlayStation, and Xbox Impulse Triggers are in on the Microsoft side. Hardware tessellation and displacement round out the visual additions, and both platforms get power-saving modes. Xbox players additionally receive Play Anywhere support and handheld compatibility. On PC, DLSS support arrives alongside spatial audio and further quality-of-life fixes.

Setting the Stage for Metro 2039

The update also serves as a build-up to Metro 2039, which is scheduled to launch on February 4. Eurogamer went hands-on with the title back in August, with their writer describing it as a shooter with remarkable graphics and a story drawn from real-world events, noting that the game produces a crushing sense of claustrophobia that makes the earlier entries feel almost relaxed by comparison. The free update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux is available to all existing owners across the PC storefronts listed above and on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
