Where to buy
Metro 2039 is an upcoming 2026 first-person shooter developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. It is the fourth mainline entry in the critically acclaimed Metro video game series, following Metro 2033 (2010), Metro: Last Light (2013), and Metro Exodus (2019). Set three years after the events of Metro Exodus, the game returns to the dark, claustrophobic tunnels of the Moscow Metro in a brand-new, original story written by 4A Games in collaboration with Dmitry Glukhovsky, author of the best-selling Metro book trilogy. Blending intense survival horror, atmospheric exploration, stealth, and brutal combat, Metro 2039 promises to deliver the series’ signature tension and moral weight in one of the most haunting post-apocalyptic worlds ever created.
The year is 2039. A quarter-century after nuclear war devastated the surface, the last remnants of humanity cling to existence deep beneath the poisoned ruins of Moscow. Factions that once fought for dominance have now been forcibly united under a single authoritarian banner — the Novoreich — led by a mysterious new Fuhrer. As hope fades and the future looks bleaker than ever, players step into the role of a new protagonist drawn into a harrowing conflict for the very soul of the Metro. The story explores themes of unity versus tyranny, the cost of survival, and the thin line between civilization and savagery in a world where every shadow hides danger.
Gameplay
Metro 2039 builds on the proven formula of its predecessors while evolving the signature 4A Engine for next-generation fidelity. Players will experience a powerful single-player campaign focused on exploration, resource-scarce survival, tense stealth, and visceral combat against mutated creatures, human enemies, and the unrelenting horrors of the underground. Expect handcrafted, densely detailed environments filled with “frozen stories” — narrative vignettes told through the ruined world itself.
Returning hallmarks include:
- Limited ammunition and resources that force meaningful choices.
- Dynamic lighting, realistic ballistics, and immersive audio design.
- A mix of linear narrative-driven sections and semi-open explorable areas.
- Moral and story choices that shape the experience and multiple possible endings.
The game emphasizes atmosphere above all: thick darkness, choking gas masks, terrifying enemy encounters, and the constant psychological pressure of the Metro tunnels. Technical upgrades include enhanced performance, advanced lighting, and improved AI for more reactive and intelligent foes.
Development and Legacy
4A Games has been working on Metro 2039 for several years, using their proprietary 4A Engine with a renewed focus on performance and visual storytelling. The project draws inspiration from real-world events, including the global pandemic and ongoing conflicts, to create an even more grounded and emotionally charged narrative. Co-creative director Pavel Ulmer has emphasized that the team is not “romanticizing the post-apocalypse,” aiming instead for raw authenticity.
Officially revealed on April 16, 2026, during an Xbox First Look event, the game has already generated massive excitement among fans. It marks the first mainline Metro title without Artyom as the protagonist, opening the door for fresh perspectives in the universe.
