Metro: Last Light

14 May 2013 Released 18+ Metascore 82

Metro: Last Light is a 2013 post-apocalyptic first-person shooter and survival horror video game developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. It is the direct sequel to the 2010 cult hit Metro 2033. While its predecessor was a direct adaptation of Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel, Last Light features an original storyline developed in close collaboration with the author. Following the canonical “bad ending” of the first game—in which Artyom calls down a devastating missile strike on the psychic mutants known as the Dark Ones—the game explores the heavy burden of guilt and the escalating threat of all-out war in the underground.

Set a year after the events of the first game, Artyom is now an official member of the Spartan Order, an elite peacekeeping force occupying D6, a massive pre-war military bunker. Word reaches the Rangers that a single infant Dark One survived the missile strike. Artyom is sent to the irradiated surface to find and eliminate it. However, his mission is quickly derailed as the metro’s two major ideological factions—the communist Red Line and the neo-Nazi Fourth Reich—mobilize their armies to seize D6 and its vast arsenal. Artyom must navigate a deadly political conspiracy, capture the young Dark One, and prevent humanity from destroying what little remains of its civilization.

Gameplay

Metro: Last Light builds upon the deeply immersive foundation of the first game but dramatically refines its mechanics to offer a smoother, more responsive experience. It balances traditional shooter action with tense survival horror, resource management, and a newly overhauled stealth system.

Key gameplay mechanics include:

  • Refined Stealth and Combat: The clunky stealth of the original game was completely revamped. Artyom can now perform silent, non-lethal knockouts or lethal takedowns. A blue light indicator on Artyom’s watch clearly shows when he is visible to enemies, allowing players to strategically shoot out lights, unscrew lightbulbs, and manipulate the darkness to bypass human camps.
  • On-the-Fly Customization: Players can now customize their weapons at vendor kiosks found in friendly stations, attaching silencers, night-vision scopes, extended magazines, and laser sights to a vast array of makeshift and military-grade firearms.
  • Diegetic Survival: The signature immersion of the franchise returns. Players must constantly monitor their gas mask filters when on the toxic surface, manually wipe away blood, mud, and radioactive rain from their visor, and pump a pneumatic battery to power their flashlight and night-vision goggles.
  • The Ammo Economy: The series’ unique currency system returns. Players must choose between using highly effective, pre-war military-grade incendiary bullets to quickly kill tough mutants or hoarding them to purchase weapon upgrades and standard ammunition in the station markets.

Development and Legacy

Development of Metro: Last Light was fraught with extreme challenges. The original publisher, THQ, suffered severe financial difficulties during the game’s production and officially filed for bankruptcy in December 2012. The Metro intellectual property and the publishing rights for Last Light were subsequently auctioned off and acquired by Koch Media (under their Deep Silver label) for $5.8 million.

Furthermore, the Kyiv-based 4A Games studio operated under notoriously difficult working conditions. Former THQ executives later revealed that the development team worked in cramped, freezing offices with frequent power outages, sitting on folding chairs and smuggling high-end PC equipment into Ukraine to bypass corrupt customs officials.

Despite these monumental hurdles, Metro: Last Light released in May 2013 to critical acclaim. Reviewers praised the massive graphical improvements powered by the updated 4A Engine, the gripping narrative, and the highly improved gunplay and stealth mechanics. It was considered a vast improvement over the original in almost every mechanical aspect, though some critics felt the game leaned slightly too far into action compared to the pure survival horror of the first installment. The game’s success secured the future of the franchise, leading to the remastered Redux versions in 2014 and the ambitious, semi-open-world sequel, Metro Exodus, in 2019.

Key Features:

  • A Masterpiece of Atmosphere — Immerse yourself in the dark, claustrophobic tunnels of the metro and the terrifying, storm-swept ruins of the Moscow surface.
  • Dynamic Faction Warfare — Navigate a sprawling conflict between the Red Line, the Fourth Reich, and the Spartan Rangers, encountering massive firefights and intense political espionage.
  • Deep Immersion — A HUD-less, diegetic experience that forces you to physically wipe your mask, check your watch, and manually charge your equipment to survive.
  • Improved Arsenal and Stealth — Utilize a massive array of customizable, hand-crafted weaponry, or stick to the shadows and eliminate entire camps of soldiers without firing a shot.
  • An Original Narrative — An emotional, story-driven campaign penned alongside Dmitry Glukhovsky that explores themes of xenophobia, redemption, and human survival.
