Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a 2021 compilation and remaster of BioWare’s original Mass Effect trilogy — Mass Effect (2007), Mass Effect 2 (2010), and Mass Effect 3 (2012) — developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. Released on May 14, 2021, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, with optimized backward compatibility on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, it bundles all three campaigns and more than 40 pieces of single-player DLC into a single launcher, updated for 4K displays and modern hardware.

Led by longtime BioWare writer Mac Walters, the project’s stated goal was not to remake or reimagine Commander Shepard’s story, but to modernize its presentation enough that both returning fans and newcomers could play through it without fighting fifteen-year-old technology — turning a trilogy that originally shipped across three console generations into a single, continuous experience.

A Trilogy in One Package: What’s Included

Legendary Edition merges all three games into a single installation and launcher, so the campaign can run from the opening mission of the original Mass Effect through the finale of Mass Effect 3 without switching discs or storefront entries. Alongside the base campaigns, it bundles over 40 pieces of single-player DLC — story expansions such as Lair of the Shadow Broker, Arrival, From Ashes, Leviathan, Omega, and Citadel, plus the promotional weapon, armor, and gear packs that were originally scattered across pre-order bonuses and small paid add-ons.

Two things were deliberately left out. Mass Effect 3‘s competitive multiplayer mode, Galaxy at War, is not part of the package — Legendary Edition is a single-player-only release. And the original Mass Effect‘s Pinnacle Station DLC is missing entirely; BioWare has said the source files for that add-on could not be recovered, making it the one piece of trilogy content that effectively can’t be played in its current form.

Remastering Three Games at Once

Because the three games were built years apart on evolving versions of Unreal Engine 3, BioWare’s remaster team treated each one differently rather than applying a single uniform pass. The original 2007 Mass Effect — by far the oldest and roughest of the three — received the most extensive work: overhauled lighting, textures, and character models, a rebuilt HUD, rebalanced combat and weapon handling, and a substantially reworked Mako with new physics and controls (covered in more detail on its own page). Mass Effect 2 and 3, which had aged more gracefully, were brought up to 4K-era visual standards with improved shaders, effects, and character models without needing the same level of mechanical surgery.

On top of the per-game visual work, a handful of quality-of-life changes were applied across the entire trilogy: players can now sprint outside of combat in Mass Effect 1, any class can equip any weapon type (with specialization still affecting how well they use it), and inventory and leveling were brought closer in line across all three games so the transition between them feels less jarring.

New to the Trilogy: Photo Mode, Visuals, and the Extended Cut

Several features debuted with Legendary Edition that had never been part of the Mass Effect games before. A full photo mode — the first in series history — lets players pause the action to adjust camera angle, framing, and filters for screenshots across all three games. On PC, the remaster adds support for 4K Ultra HD, HDR, ultrawide monitors, and unlocked framerates, while console versions target sharper resolutions and steadier performance than the original releases ever managed, particularly on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The trilogy’s story content was also consolidated: Mass Effect 3‘s Citadel DLC and its Extended Cut — which substantially expanded the game’s controversial original ending — are included and treated as the default way the story concludes, rather than optional add-ons players need to track down separately.

Reception: The Definitive Way Back Into the Galaxy

Legendary Edition was very well received at launch, landing in the high 80s on Metacritic across platforms and earning an aggregate “Mighty” rating from OpenCritic, placing it among the highest-rated releases of 2021. Critics consistently singled out the work done on the original Mass Effect as the standout improvement — several reviews noted that, for the first time, the first game felt like it belonged alongside its sequels rather than as the “rough one you push through to get to the good stuff.”

Nearly five years on, Legendary Edition remains the version most new players encounter first, and its existence has become part of the ongoing conversation around the franchise’s future: with BioWare developing the next mainline Mass Effect game, Legendary Edition serves as both the easiest on-ramp for newcomers and the most convenient way for longtime fans to replay Commander Shepard’s story before the series moves forward.
