Grammy-winning composer Austin Wintory has uploaded more than 20 minutes of original music he created for BioWare’s canceled Mass Effect 5, giving fans a painful but fascinating look at a project that will never see release.

A Dream Project That Never Made It

Wintory, best known for scoring the acclaimed PlayStation title Journey, described Mass Effect 5 as his “biggest dream project” and confirmed he had been in serious discussions with BioWare about handling the game’s full soundtrack. The composer made clear how much the opportunity meant to him, stating that to even work creatively within the Mass Effect universe was a privilege. As PC Gamer reported, Wintory noted that “to even dream in your sandbox was a privilege” when reflecting on his time working on the project.

The Music Itself

According to IGN, Wintory shared approximately 22 minutes of composed material following news that Mass Effect 5 had been canceled. The release of this music came as a direct response to the cancellation becoming public, with Wintory choosing to preserve and share what he had built rather than let it disappear entirely. Video Games Chronicle also covered the upload, noting the timing aligned closely with the cancellation news breaking.

Another Blow for Mass Effect Fans

The release of Wintory’s compositions lands on top of an already difficult period for the Mass Effect community. GameSpot framed this latest wave of material as yet another leak capable of breaking fan hearts, reflecting the growing pile of evidence pointing to how far along certain creative work had progressed before the project was shut down. For a franchise with a devoted following, seeing finished-sounding orchestral music composed by a decorated industry veteran surface after a cancellation announcement makes the loss feel considerably more concrete. The music serves as a reminder that real creative investment had gone into the next chapter of the series before it was brought to a halt.
