StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm

12 Mar 2013 Released T Metascore 86

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is a 2013 real-time strategy (RTS) expansion developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Serving as the second chapter in the monumental StarCraft II trilogy, it follows the Terran-focused Wings of Liberty and shifts the spotlight entirely to the terrifying, biological Zerg Swarm.

The narrative picks up shortly after the events of the previous game. Sarah Kerrigan, the former Queen of Blades, has been successfully de-infested by Jim Raynor and an ancient Xel’Naga artifact, returning her to a mostly human state. However, after a devastating Dominion attack leaves Raynor presumed dead, a grief-stricken and enraged Kerrigan abandons her humanity. She sets out to reclaim control of the fractured Zerg Swarm, traveling from planet to planet to rebuild her brood, evolve her forces, and unleash an apocalyptic campaign of revenge against the dictator Arcturus Mengsk.

Gameplay

While Wings of Liberty revolutionized the modern RTS framework, Heart of the Swarm heavily experimented with merging those mechanics with Action-RPG elements, particularly within its highly praised single-player campaign.

Key gameplay mechanics and additions include:

  • The Hero Unit: Unlike Raynor, who largely directed the war from the bridge of his ship, Kerrigan is an active, fully controllable hero unit on the battlefield in almost every mission. As the campaign progresses, she levels up, unlocking devastating active and passive abilities (like kinetic blasts, chain lightning, or spawning free Zerglings) that players can freely swap between missions to fit their playstyle.
  • The Evolution Pit: Operating out of a massive Zerg Leviathan (the equivalent of Raynor’s Hyperion), Kerrigan employs Abathur, the Swarm’s brilliant but sociopathic geneticist. Players collect “Mutagen” to permanently mutate base Zerg units. Furthermore, special “Evolution Missions” force the player to choose a permanent, branching evolutionary path for each unit (e.g., evolving the Zergling into the leaping “Raptor” strain or the rapid-spawning “Swarmling” strain).
  • Multiplayer Additions: The competitive ladder received several game-changing units that heavily altered the meta:
    • Zerg: Gained the flying Viper (a caster capable of pulling units and blinding ranged attackers) and the Swarm Host (a siege unit that spawns endless waves of free Locusts).
    • Terran: Received the transforming Hellbat (a beefy, flame-throwing frontline unit) and the highly volatile, burrowing Widow Mine.
    • Protoss: Added the massive, long-range Tempest siege ship, the harassing Oracle, and the defensive Mothership Core (which could grant Nexus bases an emergency attack capability).
  • Social and QoL Features: Heart of the Swarm introduced vital modernizations to the Battle.net client, including Clan and Group support, an unranked matchmaking ladder, a global account leveling system with cosmetic rewards, and the highly innovative ability to “Resume from Replay,” allowing players to jump directly into a recorded game at any specific timestamp and take over the controls.

Development and Legacy

Released in March 2013, Heart of the Swarm arrived during the absolute peak of StarCraft II‘s dominance as the world’s premier esports title. The expansion was widely praised for its cinematic storytelling, highly polished CGI cutscenes, and the immensely satisfying progression loop of mutating the Zerg army in the campaign.

Competitively, the game was a massive success, fueling the golden era of global tournaments like the GSL, MLG, and IEM. However, the multiplayer meta of Heart of the Swarm is also historically remembered for the “Swarm Host era”—a period where professional matches between Zerg and Protoss or Terran mech players would routinely devolve into agonizingly long, multi-hour stalemates of endless, free unit spawns crashing into static defenses. This heavily influenced Blizzard to deliberately speed up the economy and unit lethality in the final chapter, Legacy of the Void (2015).

Today, while the competitive ladder has permanently moved on to the Legacy of the Void expansion, the Heart of the Swarm campaign remains a deeply beloved, RPG-infused highlight of the franchise, showcasing Blizzard’s mastery of single-player RTS design.

Key Features:

  • The Zerg Campaign — Play through a 20-mission, vengeance-fueled storyline focused entirely on Sarah Kerrigan’s dark journey to reclaim the Swarm.
  • Action-RPG Elements — Level up Kerrigan into a psionic powerhouse, utilizing devastating hero abilities to turn the tide of massive battles.
  • Evolve the Swarm — Work alongside Abathur in the Evolution Pit to permanently mutate your units, choosing branching, campaign-exclusive genetic upgrades.
  • Meta-Defining Units — Master the crucial new competitive additions, including the Widow Mine, Viper, and Oracle.
  • Modern Social Tools — Experience the expansion that introduced unranked matchmaking, Clans, and the “Resume from Replay” feature to the franchise.

  • Microsoft Windows (PC) / macOS — March 12, 2013
  • (Currently available via the Battle.net launcher as part of the StarCraft II Campaign Collection)
