StarCraft: Remastered

Remaster of Starcraft
14 Aug 2017 Released T Metascore 85

StarCraft: Remastered is a 2017 real-time strategy (RTS) game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Released nearly two decades after the original 1998 masterpiece, the game represents an incredibly delicate, respectful modernization of the absolute titan of the RTS genre. It completely overhauls the visuals and audio of both the original StarCraft and the legendary Brood War expansion, while strictly adhering to a massive, self-imposed developer rule: absolutely do not touch the gameplay code.

The game features the exact same narrative as the original titles, allowing players to experience the epic, three-way galactic war between the Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss—and the rise of Sarah Kerrigan as the Queen of Blades—with crisp, beautifully modernized production values.

Gameplay

If you know how to play the original 1998 StarCraft, you know exactly how to play Remastered. The developers deliberately preserved the underlying 2D gameplay engine, meaning the mechanical feel, unit balance, and famously high skill ceiling are completely identical to the original.

Key gameplay mechanics and modernizations include:

  • The 4K Overhaul: Every single unit, building, and map tile was meticulously redrawn by hand to support widescreen 4K resolutions. The gritty, pre-rendered aesthetic of the 90s was perfectly preserved, but you can now zoom in to see the individual rivets on a Terran Siege Tank or the scales on a Zerg Hydralisk.
  • The Graphics Toggle: At any point during a campaign mission or a multiplayer match, players can press the F5 key to seamlessly, instantly toggle the graphics between the glorious new 4K visuals and the chunky, pixelated 1998 original graphics.
  • Identical Mechanics and Quirks: Because the game runs on the exact same underlying logic engine, the archaic limitations of 1998 remain fully intact. You can still only select a maximum of 12 units at a time. Furthermore, legendary pathfinding “bugs” (like the notoriously clumsy movement of the Protoss Dragoon, or the ability to tightly stack flying Mutalisks) were deliberately left in the game, as they had become foundational pillars of the competitive meta.
  • Modern Matchmaking: While the gameplay remained old-school, the backend was completely dragged into the modern era. Remastered introduced a modern, skill-based matchmaking ladder, global leaderboards, cloud saves for the campaign, and seamless integration with the modern Battle.net social client.
  • Remastered Audio: The game’s legendary sound effects, unit barks (“My life for Aiur!”, “Battlecruiser operational”), and the phenomenal, atmospheric soundtrack were completely re-recorded and updated for high-fidelity audio systems.

Development and Legacy

The development of StarCraft: Remastered was handled by Blizzard’s “Classic Games” division. Recognizing that they were tampering with South Korea’s unofficial national pastime, the developers worked heavily in secret with legendary Korean professional players (like Flash, Jaedong, and Bisu) during development. The pros playtested the game rigorously to ensure that the exact “feel” and timing of the game had not been accidentally altered by the new graphics engine.

Upon its release in August 2017, the remaster was met with widespread acclaim. Critics and hardcore fans alike praised Blizzard’s immense restraint in not “fixing” the archaic pathfinding or unit limits, recognizing that the game’s brutal difficulty and high Actions Per Minute (APM) requirements are exactly what makes Brood War so brilliant.

The release successfully revitalized the classic competitive scene. South Korea’s premier Brood War tournament, the AfreecaTV StarCraft League (ASL), immediately transitioned to the Remastered client, introducing the legendary game to a brand new generation of esports viewers in gorgeous 4K.

In 2019, Blizzard released a phenomenally unique DLC pack for the game called StarCraft: Cartooned. Created in collaboration with the popular YouTube channel Carbot Animations, this graphical overhaul replaces every single asset in the game with adorable, highly expressive, Saturday-morning-cartoon-style 2D animations, proving that even the grim darkness of the Koprulu Sector can be incredibly cute.

Key Features:

  • Pristine 4K Visuals — Experience the legendary RTS with beautifully redrawn widescreen graphics, alongside re-recorded audio and dialogue.
  • The F5 Toggle — Instantly switch between the modern 4K visuals and the original 1998 pixel graphics with the press of a single button.
  • Untouched Gameplay — Master the exact same perfectly balanced, brutally demanding competitive meta that defined the original Brood War esports scene.
  • Modern Multiplayer — Ditch the archaic 90s lobbies and jump into a modern, skill-based matchmaking ladder with global leaderboards and cloud-saved hotkeys.
  • The Complete Epic — Play through the sprawling, 50-plus mission storyline of both the original StarCraft and the Brood War expansion in one unified client.

Release Platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows (PC) / macOS — August 14, 2017 (Currently available via the Battle.net launcher)
