SILENT HILL: Townfall is an upcoming first-person psychological survival horror game developed by Scottish studio Screen Burn Interactive (formerly known as No Code) and co-published by Annapurna Interactive and Konami. Following its major gameplay debut at the February 2026 PlayStation State of Play, it is slated for a 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. As a standalone spin-off, it attempts to take the iconic franchise in a bold, highly narrative-driven new direction.

Core Concept and Story

The narrative steps away from the traditional American setting of the previous games and instead takes place in St. Amelia, a cold, desolate coastal town inspired by Scotland.

You play as Simon Ordell, a man mysteriously called to the island to “set things right.” Simon awakens with almost nothing but the clothes on his back, an IV drip bag, and a medical bracelet bearing his name. As he ventures into the thick, unnatural fog of St. Amelia, the story heavily explores themes of medical trauma, collective guilt, and a cryptic, haunting past he is forced to confront. The game operates heavily on the premise that “Silent Hill” is not just a specific town, but a psychological phenomenon that can manifest wherever deep trauma exists.

Gameplay and Features

Built in Unreal Engine 5, Townfall drastically shifts the mechanical perspective of the series to focus on intimate, atmospheric dread:

  • First-Person Immersion: Unlike the recent Silent Hill 2 remake, Townfall opts for a strictly first-person perspective with virtually no HUD, deeply immersing the player in the suffocating environment and emphasizing observation and stealth over pure action.
  • The CRTV Mechanic: In a brilliant twist on the franchise’s classic static radio, Simon utilizes a portable, pocket-sized CRT television. This device acts as your primary survival and investigative tool. You must use it to pick up anomalous signals, detect the terrifying silhouettes of nearby monsters before they see you, and tune into eerie frequencies to solve narrative puzzles.
  • Vulnerable Combat: Simon is not an action hero or a soldier. The gameplay loop prioritizes discrete exploration and frantic, desperate encounters. When combat is entirely unavoidable, you must rely on a highly limited pool of improvised tools and melee weapons to survive.

Reception and Anticipation

Following the extensive 2026 gameplay reveals, Townfall generated highly polarized but deeply intrigued reactions from the hardcore Silent Hill community.

Fans of the developer’s previous narrative-heavy puzzle titles (like Observation and Stories Untold) have heavily praised the game’s oppressive Scottish atmosphere, the incredible Unreal Engine 5 lighting, and the highly unique CRTV mechanic.

However, the game has drawn some expected skepticism from long-time purists. Some fans expressed disappointment over the shift to a first-person perspective, preferring the cinematic over-the-shoulder look. Additionally, some community members have voiced concern that the narrative seems to be leaning heavily on the “protagonist with repressed amnesia and guilt” trope that has dominated the franchise since Silent Hill 2, though the developers have promised to subvert those expectations by focusing on a broader, collective trauma.

Quick Note

SILENT HILL: Townfall is a fresh, indie-led reinterpretation of the legendary fog.

In short: It trades classic third-person survival horror for an intimate, first-person narrative thriller. If you are open to stepping outside the original town limits to explore a brand-new, Scottish-inspired nightmare using a portable television to track monsters, it is shaping up to be one of the most mechanically unique entries in the franchise’s modern revival.
